The Eisemann Center is glad to welcome back the students of Teresa Mayo to the Green Mezzanine Gallery! This exhibition features art students from the young adult social skills group at The Callier Center for
Communication Disorders at the University of Texas at Dallas. These art classes provide students the freedom to create based on the
elements and principles of art and encourages the use of creativity to increase self-awareness and communication skills. The classroom provides a stress-free environment for the participants, resulting in a sense of pride and
accomplishment.
"The teaching philosophy I use in my Callier classroom is modeled after the teaching methods of Friedl Dicker-Brandeis...an art educator that taught art to the children of Terezin during the Holocaust...She used art as a window to the soul and as a tool to release anxiety and restore, if only for a few moments, a sense of 'normalcy'...Like Brandeis, as an art educator to students on the autism spectrum, I give the students the medium, the technique and the lesson, but strive to maintain a place of peace within the classroom by utilizing the healing properties of aesthetic creativity and leaving the academics of art critique behind."
-Teresa Mayo, quoted in a press release in 2021
Visual arts have frequently been used as a therapeutic means of expression. Come celebrate these artists and their accomplishments by stopping by the gallery as we near April, World Autism Month!
