We are Santa Barbara. As a community we are curious, engaged and resilient. We have weathered storms before, and come together to lend a helping hand to our neighbors. It is who we are.
While your options for inspiration and entertainment are in flux, Arts & Lectures is still here for you. We’re continuing onward, sharing ideas that inspire us and working to create new ways for us all to stay connected through digital arts and culture content.
In the words of our good friend Pico Iyer, “Freedom seldom comes from changing our circumstances, and nearly always from changing the way we look at them.”
The first edition of our new digital arts and ideas series features the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour and Dr. Jane Goodall, who, after six decades of revolutionary scientific insights and community-centered conservation, is still leading the fight to educate the world on climate change and conserving our planet.
At 86 years young, Dr. Goodall travels nearly 300 days each year, speaking around the world to raise awareness, inspire change and encourage each of us to do our part in making the world a better place. You can see two of her lectures at TED, where she urges us to start using our sophisticated language – the only real difference between humans and chimps – to change the world, and shows us how we can live side-by-side with threatened animals.
Many of you were able to attend last month's free Thematic Learning Initiative screening of the National Geographic documentary Jane. The film draws on never-before-seen footage shot in the 1960s for National Geographic by Hugo van Lawick, who arrived to document Dr. Goodall’s life among the chimpanzees in Gombe, Tanzania, and left as her husband. Goodall says it takes her "right back into the skin of my 26-year-old self." If you haven't yet seen the film, it's available now from a variety of streaming services including Hulu and Amazon.
“Every individual matters. Every individual has a role to play. Every individual makes a difference.” – Dr. Jane Goodall
