A Behind-the-Scenes Peek at YOUR Theatre

I sat down and tried to rest. I could not. I was too much excited. A phase of my life was closing tonight, a new one opening tomorrow: impossible to slumber in the interval. I must watch feverishly while the change was being accomplished.”

--  Charlotte Brontë (Apr. 21, 1816 – Mar. 31, 1855), from Jane Eyre. Charlotte was the eldest of the three literary Brontë sisters. Their novels became classics of English literature. Charlotte is remembered for Jane Eyre, Emily for Wuthering Heights, and Anne for Agnes Grey. All three novels were published in 1847.

Desirée Roots - An-All Star Artist Comes Into Her Own

Desirée Roots

We promised to begin profiling our three new Artistic Directors this week, and we’re beginning with Desirée Roots, Artistic Director—Community. All three of our ADs share the weight of our company’s artistic leadership, partnering on many decisions while contributing expertise from individual perspectives. Desirée’s principal responsibility is to ensure that our mission-driven commitment to community remains front-and-center in every aspect of our work. We ALWAYS will belong to ALL of Greater Richmond and Virginia. Desi began working with us as a 16-year-old intern, and starred/co-starred in countless productions, including Ain’t Misbehavin’, Caroline or Change, The Color Purple, Dreamgirls, Ella and Her Fella, Honk!, The Magic Mrs. Piggle Wiggle, Mame, and Once on This Island. A graduate of Virginia Union, Desi’s been a stalwart leader with Downtown Presents and the Richmond Jazz Society. We’re privileged to enlist her many talents at our helm.

Bonnie and Claire Opens, Beehive Closes

Bonnie and Claire

All theatres have their own “Circle of Life.” One show closes and another opens. Our hit production of Beehive closes this week, and those of you who’ve waited to see it have one show tonight, two tomorrow, and a final matinee on Sunday. The big treat this week is you’ll get to see our own Desirée Roots stepping into the role of Aretha Franklin. Even as we say “goodbye” to Beehive, we shout out “welcome” to the World Premiere of Bo Wilson’s Bonnie and Claire. B&C opens TONIGHT at Hanover Tavern. As a final triumph in our 69th Season, we’re extremely proud to introduce a brand new heartfelt comedy to American theatre. Starring Jan Guarino, Melissa Johnston Price and Sydnee Graves, B&C will tickle your funny bone and warm your hearts. Be among the first to enjoy a play that we believe will soon become a favorite in theatres nationwide.

Despite COVID, Our 21-22 Educational Tour Comes Out a Winner!

Harriet Tubman

While local audiences cheer our mainstage runs of Beehive, Mamma Mia! and the like, hundreds of thousands of students throughout metro Richmond, all of VA, and the eastern half of the United States learn and laugh with Virginia Rep’s acclaimed touring programs. Education is a HUGE part of our business model. During the semester that just ended, we eased back into the pandemic-ravaged touring arena, mounting productions of Harriet Tubman, Have You Filled Your Bucket Today?, Hugs and Kisses, I Have a Dream, The Little Red Hen, and The Three Little Pigs. Our intrepid casts knocked ‘em dead from Radford to VA Beach and Waterville, Maine to Miami, FL. Even after many COVID-caused cancellations, we presented 268 performances in 199 localities, adding $413,218 to our recovering annual revenues. Thanks and congratulations to all the actors, directors, playwrights, designers and teaching artists who donned their masks and made it possible!

Two-Way Talkback

In response to last week’s listing of the Top 10 longest running B’way musicals of all time, we received this aghast email from G. Tendahl: “The revival of Oh! Calcutta! is the eighth longest running Broadway musical!?! Topping the record-breaking runs of Fiddler, Hello Dolly!, and all of Rodgers and Hammerstein?!?!” Read ‘em and weep, G. Indeed it is. Although technically an “erotic musical revue,” all those keeping score confirm that Oh! C!, with its 13-year run, bests the best of them. Fiddler comes in at #17, with Hello, Dolly! nipping at its heals as #18. None of the great musicals by Rodgers and Hammerstein make it into the top 20. There are doubtless many reasons for the success of Oh! C! We chalk it up to the exclamation points.
