Chicago Women Activists
Wednesday, September 2 at 7pm

Chicago’s 19th century history typically focuses on—and has been told by—middle- and upper-class men credited with building businesses that fueled the city’s growth. Less known and recognized are the women who strived to advance civic and social reforms, advocate for more livable housing and secure the right to vote.

ONE MORE THING

Sounding Boards is a mural-centered initiative organized by members of CAC Industry Council member Eastlake Studio in response to the Black Lives Matter movement, with proceeds funding materials, supporting artists and benefiting My Block, My Hood, My City’s Small Business Relief Fund. More than 25 Sounding Boards murals have been created to date, including a permanent unity wall at the Hope Learning Academy Chicago, seen here in progress, and a Chicago Blackhawks mural originally installed just around the corner from the CAC.

Despite the challenges presented by an ongoing pandemic, Eastlake Studio welcomed another CAC Teen Fellow this summer, Zion E. Wilson Chambers, an incoming freshman at Iowa State University and an extremely talented yo-yo enthusiast. “Zion interacted with different studio members every day, ranging from architects and interior designers to our communications manager and studio librarian,” says Eastlake Studio Founding Principal Tom Zurowski, AIA.

“Everyone at Eastlake enjoyed this short time with Zion and wishes him well in his studies. We hope to be able to bring him back next summer when everyone is back in the studio.”

“The office was very welcoming to me,” says Zion. “I enjoyed getting to go on site visits and actually contribute design ideas. It was interesting to see how interior design firms differ from architecture firms. I enjoyed sketching ideas in the office for actual projects and being included in conversations and meetings. I would definitely do it again.”
