The Wilma Theater has secured a role as a Co-Producer of FAT HAM, the 2022 Pulitzer Prize-winning play, opening on Broadway on April 12.
The Wilma is the first Philadelphia theater to participate in a commercial Broadway production as a producer!
“Following the success of the Wilma's digital production of FAT HAM and its 2022 sold-out run with The Public Theater and National Black Theatre, the Wilma is thrilled to support the continued life of the play on a larger stage,” said Wilma Managing Director Leigh Goldenberg. “This Co-Producer credit was made possible by a group of Wilma board members and major donors.”
FAT HAM, the deliciously funny, Pulitzer Prize-winning new play, comes to Broadway following a critically acclaimed, sold-out run with The Public Theater and National Black Theatre. Playwright James Ijames and Director Saheem Ali reinvent Shakespeare's masterpiece, creating what The New York Times calls “a hilarious yet profound tragedy smothered in comedy.”
Juicy is a queer, Southern college kid, already grappling with some serious questions of identity, when the ghost of his father shows up in their backyard, demanding that Juicy avenge his murder. But here's the rub! Revenge doesn't come easy to Juicy, a sensitive and self-aware young Black man in search of his own happiness and liberation. From an uproarious family cookout emerges a compelling examination of love and loss, pain and joy.
FAT HAM was commissioned by the Wilma Theater and premiered as a digital production directed by Co-Artistic Director Morgan Green, prior to its sold out run at The Public Theater.
