Wed 13 Mar 2024
As daffodils start to bloom, trees come into bud and the days get longer – here we are with our first newsletter of 2024! Feels like it’s been a long time coming, doesn’t it?
Things are whirring into life at the Everyman, too, with rehearsals soon to start for The Legend of Ned Ludd. Written by our very own Joe Ward Munrow and directed by one of my favourite theatre makers, Jude Christian, I’m super excited about this one.
You can come and meet some of the team (and loads more besides!) at our Open House later this month – and we’re looking forward to our first Freelance Mixer of the year as well.
And, in extra exciting news, you might have seen that we’re recruiting for a new Creative Director! With our Artistic team now nearly complete, we’re looking forward to that final piece of the puzzle. So if you’ve got a vision for the future of our theatres, take a look below for application details.
As ever, there are more updates and opportunities below, so do read on for more.
Until next time,
Tommo
New Works Associate
First off, a huge thanks to everyone who’s said hello in person, by email and on Twitter since I joined the team last year. I’ve been having a blast meeting so many people in Liverpool’s artistic community, and am really looking forward to getting to you know you and your work better over the coming months.
And speaking of people joining the team – in our last newsletter, we said we were recruiting for a new Assistant Producer… and now she’s here! The wonderful Zoe Walker joins us from Hull Truck, and we couldn’t be more delighted.
We’ll also have another two members of the team joining soon, who I’ll introduce next month.
Other things to look forward to in the next newsletter will be an announcement about our Script Submissions window, and the return of Scratch Studio!
And a reminder that the Writers’ Room is available for your use as well. With a library of fantastic contemporary scripts (and some old ones I’ve never heard of), it’s a great place to come and be inspired, do some co-working, or get round a table to read a new play. You can either email me to book in advance (newworks@everymanplayhouse.com), or just come to the Everyman and chance your luck! If the building is open, the Writers’ Room is there for you.
After a great year of events in 2023, we’re excited to
invite you to the Everyman’s first freelancer event of 2024:
Tue 23 Apr, 5.30pm
EV2 (next to the Theatre Bar) at Liverpool
Everyman, Hope Street.
This is the eighth in a series of events helping you connect
with fellow freelancers and artists – and helping us connect with more
creatives across the city!
Itinerary
5.30pm-5.45pm: Check-in & welcome drink
5.45pm- 7.30pm Mingle and mix with fellow creatives and Everyman &
Playhouse staff (hiya!)
7.30pm: Option to see The Legend of Ned Ludd with
discounted tickets (use code MIXER10)
Post-show: Feel free to stick around & get a
drink with new friends in the Theatre Bar
A registration form for the event will be sent out soon!
We’ll be announcing more mixers later in the year, all coinciding with our other in-house shows: Tell Me How It Ends, The Lieutenant of Inishmore, and Rapunzel.
We’ve got a great couple of shows coming up at the Playhouse this month:
A Song for Ella Grey
Wed 13 – Sat 16 Mar
This week, David Almond’s haunting take on the Orpheus & Euridice myth is brought to the stage in Zoe Cooper’s “stylish and seductive” adaptation, produced by Pilot Theatre (Noughts & Crosses).
It got great reviews in The Guardian and The Stage, and I can’t wait to see it.
My Beautiful Laundrette
Tue 26 – Sat 30 Mar
Nicole Behan (Co-Artistic Director of Paperwork Theatre and tutor to our YEP Directors, directs a bold new production of Hanif Quershi’s Oscar-nominated film. It’s got queer love, subversive culture clashes, and original music composed by the Pet Shop Boys’ Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe – what’s not to love?!
The original Leicester Curve production was raucous and heartfelt, so I’m really pleased that this remount is coming to us.
Then elsewhere, here’s what’s on my radar – which, in honour of International Women’s Day, is all female-led, trail-blazing stuff.
THEATRE
A Taste of Honey
Royal Exchange, Manchester
from Fri 15 Mar
Shelagh Delaney’s bracing, sharp and radical slice of Salford life is coming to Manchester, directed by the very brilliant Emma Baggott. This is a total classic, and for good reason: it put working-class women front and centre, and platformed a teenage voice in a 1950s theatre scene dominated by middle-class, middle-aged men. (How times have changed, eh…? 😒)
MUSIC
Say She She
Hangar 34
Sat 30 Mar
The gig blurb describes them as “discodelic”, and their first single was an ode to the Guerilla Girls (fighting racial and gender discrimination in the visual art world) – so you know they’re gonna be extremely cool. Also, I saw them at Green Man Festival last year, and they’re guaranteed good vibes: great harmonies, very catchy, and sure to get you dancing.
EXHIBITION
Girl Power! Spice Girls at 30
British Music Experience
Now until Sun 8 Sep
The 90s are back! But it’s not all bucket hats and an imploding Tory government – you can also take a journey back through the history of girl power, via an exhibition of the Spice Girls’ outfits! This sounds ridiculous and brilliant, and it’s on until September.
