Upcoming Exhibition Header: Chang Dai-chien, Portrait of Li Bai

Chang Dai-chien: A Master of Modern Chinese Painting

AUGUST 29, 2026 – JANUARY 30, 2027

Widely regarded as one of the most important Chinese painters of the 20th century, Chang Dai-chien (1899 – 1983) was both a master traditionalist and an innovative modernist. Trained in literati painting, he achieved early fame for his technical virtuosity and even produced convincing "ancient-style" works inspired by earlier masters. Later in life, especially during his years abroad, he developed increasingly expressive splashed-ink and splashed-color landscapes that expanded the possibilities of ink painting. This exhibition focuses on three works by Chang Dai-chien that illustrate the artist's deep engagement with classical Chinese traditions and his remarkable ability to reinterpret them for the modern era.

Join us for an accessible art workshop for the entire family! This program is for children with autism and their families, and includes interactive time in the galleries, an art workshop, free admission to the Museum, and autism supports. All participating staff members are trained to lead programs for people with autism.

René Morales

The Norton Welcomes René Morales as Contemporary Curator in Residence

Please join us in welcoming René Morales as the Norton’s new Glenn W. & Cornelia T. Bailey Contemporary Curator in Residence.

Morales will guide the growth of the Norton's contemporary collection, shaping acquisitions from 1961 to the present and providing leadership for the Contemporary Art Council.

Raised in South Florida, Morales brings leadership experience from the Pérez Art Museum Miami and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. He has worked on some 60 exhibitions and helped bring thousands of works into museum collections, including pieces by Carmen Herrera, Hélio Oiticica, Tania Bruguera, and Gabriel Orozco.
