Hubbard Street + Alonzo King LINES Ballet
"Choreographies are really thought constructions. They're to stir thought, or they're to awaken the heart. The goal is that the human being who enters the theater is a different human being when they leave the theater."
– Alonzo King
Join Hubbard Street for a revolutionary collaboration with Alonzo King's San Francisco-based company.
Both companies onstage together at the Harris Theater create a “supergroup” of contemporary and neoclassical dance artists.
New choreography by LINES Ballet Artistic Director Alonzo King pushes the dancers’ artistic and physical limits while extracting their most intriguing qualities.

Critical acclaim for Alonzo King's work with Hubbard Street
“Alonzo King’s hypnotic work from 2000 [Following the Subtle Current Upstream] goes on a fast and furious journey, but it’s one ingeniously crafted to merge lyricism, tension, harmony and drama into one spell-binding whole.”

What's been your experience with LCDS?
My first day on scholarship, I took a class with Dionna Pridgeon. She pushed me further mentally and physically with my dance.
What did you gain as a dancer after having endured such a challenge?
I felt more connected and expressive with my movement than I ever had before. That's when I knew I was this was the place for me. I've learned how to love dance. The teachers here helped me find my own style and grow as an individual. I'm also less stiff from taking the variety of classes they offer here. It's helped me expand my dance palette.
What does expressing yourself through dance mean to you?
I dance because it's a great creative outlet for me. It's also very therapeutic. I love the physical challenge of dance. There's always something to strive for, whether it's physical or emotional. I'm considering the possibility of becoming a professional dancer.
Is LCDS just for aspiring professional dancers?
No! The classes are awesome here. Everyone's genuine and accepting too. I like the crazy variety of people.

Keeping Dancers Dancing: Athletico Physical Therapist Travels to Russia with Hubbard Street
Between rehearsals, performances and tours, the life of an elite performing artist is extraordinarily demanding. Staying healthy and injury-free is the key to successfully managing the everyday challenges of professional dancing. As the Official Provider of Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy for Hubbard Street, Athletico keeps Hubbard Street Dancers healthy and performing to the best of their ability, providing on-site physical therapy, massage therapy and injury-prevention support for all dancers. Athletico clinicians work with the dancers in the studio, theater and on tour, both nationally and internationally.
Athletico Lincoln Park/Lakeview physical therapist Kathleen Holden joined Hubbard Street on their trip to St. Petersburg, Russia last winter. As the traveling PT, Kathleen was on call for the performers, stage crew and artistic staff. She also served as the sole healthcare provider.
When the Company arrived and began rehearsals, they learned the theater's stage and rehearsal studio floors were "raked," or slightly angled toward the audience, a convention more common in Europe than in the U.S. Dancers who typically rehearse and perform on flat floors can find raked stages to be quite a challenge, often experiencing a few more ankle and lower leg pains than usual, which proved true this trip.
Kathleen was available for appointments with the dancers, and she also offered opportunities for dancers to drop in to have aches and injuries evaluated and treated. Most of the time, the accommodations allowed her to have access to a treatment table and a separate room for rehabilitation. At times when these were not available, she improvised, treating dancers on a bench in a hallway or on the floor. Practicing physical therapy far from home is very different from practicing in the clinic, but it makes for a very exciting experience.
Overall, the dancers remained healthy and performed to their fullest. The shows were a great success.
Complimentary Injury Screenings
If you experience an ache or pain, Athletico offers complimentary injury screenings to all Hubbard Street Dance Chicago Dancers and fans. Complimentary injury screenings are available at all centers.
