A note from Ramiro J. Atristaín-Carrión, co-chair of the CSO Latino Alliance Advisory Board

A Decade of Musical Harmony and Networking with the CSO Latino Alliance

Dear Friends,

As the Founding Chair of the CSO Latino Alliance, it has been an honor to serve as chair and co-chair for the past ten years. As my term concludes this season, I am excited to see the future unfold with our new leadership. Over the past decade, we have celebrated harmonious camaraderie, timeless music and the remarkable contributions of our esteemed Board members. Their diverse backgrounds and shared passion for classical music have made our journey extraordinary.

My love for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra began during my college days in Chicago. Over the past thirteen seasons, I have witnessed Maestro Riccardo Muti inspire audiences, leading the CSO with passion and excellence. Each concert has revitalized my spirit, and I have admired Muti’s commitment to nurturing young talent, shaping them into the musicians they are today. What a privilege!

Looking ahead, I encourage you to attend our upcoming preconcert event, Noche alegre, tomorrow, June 11 — my last event as co-chair. This event will showcase Ravel’s musical contributions and his Spanish influence as a composer. The CSO program describes the concert as exploring “the French fascination with Spanish culture in Debussy’s sultry Ibéria and Ravel’s ever-popular Boléro.” As a Basque descendant, I have a keen awareness of Joseph Maurice Ravel’s Basque background. Ravel, born in Ciboure, in the Basque Country (País Vasco), was really a renowned Basque composer, pianist and conductor. Despite his Basque heritage, he is often solely recognized as a French composer, though his Spanish influence is significant. Ravel’s connection to his Basque roots is evident in his fluency in the Basque language and his incorporation of Basque themes into his compositions, such as the unfinished masterpiece “Zazpiak Bat” (The Seven Are One), a tribute to the Basque people.

Thank you all for your unwavering support and dedication to the transformative power of music. Your participation in the CSO Latino Alliance has been invaluable, and I look forward to many more years of harmonious networking and musical adventures.

Keep enjoying timeless music!

Warm regards,

Ramiro J. Atristaín-Carrión

CSO Latino Alliance co-chair, founding member and — most of all — CSO enthusiast!
