MONTALVO RECEIVES 7-FIGURE GIFT TO SUPPORT LUCAS ARTISTS RESIDENCY PROGRAM
This gift will strengthen
programming and exhibitions, support for artists, and expand community engagement
Dear friend,
We are so excited to announce that Montalvo has received a $5
million gift from the George and Judy Marcus Family Foundation.
With an emphasis on increasing
community engagement with the arts, this gift will provide support
for our summer exhibition and arts festival, to be renamed to The
Marcus Exhibition and Festival. It also allows for the
development of two new opportunities: the emerging Marcus
Curatorial Fellowship for students interested in
pursuing a career in the arts, and an annual commissioning award, the Marcus Prize, to be
awarded to an exceptional artist or collective based on a project proposal around a certain theme.
“We believe in the power of the arts and the positive
impact they can have on the community,” commented Judy Marcus of the Marcus Family Foundation, who is also a former Montalvo trustee and longtime supporter of arts and education initiatives throughout the Bay Area.
In addition, the gift will support
the physical reopening of the LAP,
which has been closed since March of 2020 due to the
pandemic. Artists will be welcomed back beginning this month,
including Artist Fellows supported by an Andy Warhol Foundation
grant and participating artists in this year’s Marcus Exhibition and
Festival, Claiming Space: Refiguring the Body in Landscape, which opens on July 15.
We are so thrilled to welcome back our artists and we're looking forward to seeing you this summer as community arts events return to our grounds!
