Ring in the New Year with the king of the funky saxophone and one of the primary architects of modern R&B, Maceo Parker. Parker was an essential member of both James Brown's JBs, and George Clinton's Parliament/ Funkadelic band. He brings his super-powered band back to SFJAZZ for an explosive New Year’s celebration. Vocalist and songwriter Deva Mahal will open the shows, performing a set of groove-heavy R&B.
NYE shows include party favors, complimentary champagne, open dancefloor, giant disco ball, balloon drop and more!

Championed by Quincy Jones, Herbie Hancock, and Wynton Marsalis, 15-year-old Joey Alexander is the brightest light in jazz piano. NPR stated that his recent Tiny Desk concert ranked as one of their best. Along with saxophone star Chris Potter, bassist Kris Funn and drummer Kendrick Scott, the band will play music from the pianist's past two recordings, Eclipse, and his brand new holiday album A Joey Alexander Christmas.

For this Listening Party, Randall Kline is joined by eminent jazz writer, critic and Director of Editorial Content for WGBO Nate Chinen. They will be discussing Chinen’s most recent and critically-acclaimed book, Playing Changes: Jazz for the New Century. Named "one of the best books of 2018" by GQ Magazine, Playing Changes unpacks the synergies between jazz and post-millennial hip-hop and R&B.
The world’s top-selling jazz instrumentalist returns for nine shows. The trumpet superstar is currently one of the most important, innovative figures of the contemporary music world. He has collaborated with everyone from Yo-Yo Ma and Herbie Hancock to Paul Simon and Sting, and is as likely to play the second movement of Rodrigo’s “Concierto de Aranjuez” as he is Al Green’s grooving “Let’s Stay Together”.
For one night only, over 60 legends and rising stars perform in unique collaborations to honor Chucho Valdés. This lively and influential fundraiser directly supports SFJAZZ artistic and school programs.
