BEHIND THE SCENES:
YOU'RE A GOOD MAN, CHARLIE BROWN

Choreographer for You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, Cy Paolantonio, on Creativity and Play in Rehearsals

All of the characters in You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown are kids, and yet the adult actors embody youth so well. How does your choreography lend itself to youthfulness?

"Before any movement began, I gathered our Charlie Brown cast in a circle and led them in a prompted round robin exercise. The theme was childhood. Each person was to say the first word that came to mind, without thinking about it. The word eventually expanded to a sentence, the sentences expanded to forgotten stories about our youth. It was incredible to see how each artist really sank into this exercise to tap into that childlike state. I believe that in order to truly embody a character, you must allow your mind to unselfconsciously reach into its depths to unlock things you might’ve forgotten...I’m so glad that the choreography was an extension of that."

New Musical Commission:
BROKEN GROUND

On May 6, Village Theatre produced a reading in New York City of our new musical commission, BROKEN GROUND, featuring friends of Village Theatre Diana Huey (Village Theatre's It Shoulda Been You, 5th Ave’s The Little Mermaid) and Kennedy Kanagawa (recently in Eastbound, Broadway’s upcoming Into the Woods).

The show follows a young woman in 1912 China as she sets out on the path created for her, by both tradition and her family, to marry a young soldier. When her reality shifts due to a story written in NüShū, the centuries-old writing system created by and exclusively for women, she discovers how to honor the path set for her and the one she wishes to forge herself.

BROKEN GROUND will be a part of Village Theatre’s upcoming Festival of New Musicals. Become a Village Originals Member and learn about its journey to development from its writers, and hear songs from the show featuring some of the New York cast!
