Sarah Gomez is a Dallas based artist from San Antonio with a BFA in Studio Art from the University of Texas at Austin. Her works have been displayed across DFW, Austin, as well as several showings in San Jose and Hermosa Beach, California. In 2023, she was awarded a residency at the Horlock House Gallery and History Museum in Navasota, TX, her first solo exhibition.

Gomez creates portraits that suggest domestic intimacy. She views her works as the result of isolation, flooded by memories, nostalgia, and fabricated comfort in a new environment. The models for her portraits are her family members, close friends and partner relaxing within their newly settled home, inattentive of the gaze of the onlooker. Gomez's paintings are rendered in collaged paper and runny brush strokes using dancing washes of purples, pinks, blues and yellows. The objects stand in importance with the subject, suggesting an emotional dependence between them.

Pink Blanket explores the profound grief experienced when one leaves the comfort of a familiar place once called home, now having to build a new life surrounded by objects carrying the memory of all that was left behind. Amidst the melancholy, the series invites us to embrace the opportunity to find joy, forge connections, and find a sense of belonging in a new environment.

"My artistic journey is a canvas woven from the threads of departure and discovery, grief and growth. Through my work, I delve into the profound experience of saying goodbye, a theme that has become central to my artistic expression. As I embarked on the journey towards independence and greatness, I underestimated the depth of grief inherent in leaving behind the nurturing embrace of home. The comfort of home, a sanctuary frozen in time, holds a poignant allure, evoking a longing to preserve its essence forever."

A second First Fridays reception is scheduled for July 5 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM in the Green Mezzanine Gallery. Another opportunity to enjoy lite bites, meet the artist, and wander the gallery with your fellow local art lovers!
