‘I was left utterly stunned’

UniSon: Asia Mark, and ensemble.

UniSon: Asia Mark, and ensemble.

We appreciate all the love audiences and critics have expressed for our shows this year, but there’s something particularly thrilling about a brand-new musical by our resident ensemble being heaped with praise straight out of the gate.

UniSon, which runs through Oct. 28 in the indoor Angus Bowmer Theatre, is like nothing I’ve seen before. It takes huge risks—weaving together dance, music and poetry—and assails all obstacles so artfully, and with such grace and conviction, that I was left utterly stunned.”—Eugene Weekly

“What an amazing and beautiful production! August Wilson is smiling down from heaven, tapping his foot, and is giving you a standing ovation after every performance. Bravo!”—Marta Gomez on Facebook

“I can't stop thinking about #UniSonOSF. That show has changed me y'all.”—@charleslg_ on Twitter

“In a dazzling season, UniSon by UNIVERSES is yet another jewel. We can’t wait to see what’s next.”—Siskiyou Daily News

You’ll find more “Buzz” from audience members and critics on the play pages for all of the 2017 shows we’ve opened so far. If you’ve visited our website lately, you may have noticed some pages are looking mighty different, as we are in the midst of updating the design to make it more functional on smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices. We’ve completed phase one, which focuses on improving ticket purchasing, checkout and many of the pages that are most frequently used by patrons. We’ll be working on the second and third phases throughout the summer, and expect to be finished well in advance of our 2018 Member Presale!

Nearly time to go ‘full-on festival’

OSF Green Show: Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra.

OSF Green Show: Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra.

May, in addition to being Oregon Wine Month (more on that later), is a time of furious behind-the-scenes activity around here as we prepare to go “full-on festival” this summer when outdoor Allen Elizabethan Theatre plays The Merry Wives of Windsor, The Odyssey and Disney’s Beauty and the Beast join the six productions already running in our indoor venues, and free Green Show performances (the 2017 schedule is up!) as well as Festival Noons programming both return six days a week. In the meantime, our Living Ideas: Art and Community Dialogue series has already kicked off a season of diving into the themes of legacy, mentorship, storytelling, memory and history illuminated in both parts of Henry IV and the world premieres of UniSon and Off the Rails. Events include Talk Backs, Move Backs, Boar’s Head poetry workshops led by UNIVERSES, “digistories” and Take Them Into the Dirt: An Immersion. The first post-matinee Talk Back on May 7 explored the theme of history, and up next is the first of four The Boar’s Head: UNIVERSES on Poetry workshops on May 25, 7:00 p.m.–9:00 p.m., at Oberon’s Restaurant and Bar. The event is free and does not require tickets.

More kudos for Am Rev

Sweat (2015): Ensemble.

Sweat (2015): Ensemble.

It’s been an exciting handful of weeks for American Revolutions: The United States History Cycle. Two of the four plays nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play on May 2 were commissioned through the program: Sweat by Lynn Nottage and Indecent by Paula Vogel. Each play earned a total of three nods—and how exciting to also see OSF friends Denis Arndt, Christopher Akerlind, Jane Cox and Japhy Weideman on the list of 2017 Tony nominees!

Sweat also recently earned Lynn Nottage her second Pulitzer Prize for Drama (for which she was honored by the New York State Senate), a Best Fight Choreography Drama Desk Award nomination for OSF Resident Fight Director (and actor) U. Jonathan Toppo and a Theatre World Award for Outstanding Broadway or Off-Broadway Debut Performance for Carlo Albán, who originated the role of Oscar in OSF’s world-premiere production of Sweat and continues the role on Broadway.

News and events

 • It’s Oregon Wine Month, so how about celebrating by savoring some Oregon wine from the comfort of your theatre seat? Thanks to our new commemorative cups—which some audience members have affectionately dubbed "adult sippy cups"—you can enjoy wine, beer, cider, soda, coffee, tea, etc. while you’re enjoying our shows. Cheers!

 • To preview the new Green Show experience on the renovated Bricks, the community is invited to an Access for All celebration on June 15, 5:00 p.m.–6:00 p.m., in the Bricks courtyard. The event will feature live music, food and beverages and will culminate in a program celebrating Lead Donors Joel Axelrod and Judy Yin Shih as well as a host of others who have raised funds for the newly renovated space. The program will also feature a performance by Green Show guests Infinite Flow—A Wheelchair Dance Company. For more information on the Access for All Campaign, visit osfashland.org/AccessForAll

 • The Ashland Lions Club will celebrate the opening of the Allen Elizabethan Theatre on Friday, June 16 at 6:00 p.m. with its Feast of Will, an evening of food and entertainment featuring a full dinner of BBQ chicken or vegetarian lasagna, coupled with music by the Jefferson Bag Pipers and Siskiyou Singers. The Lions Club donates profits to projects benefiting Lithia Park and many other organizations. Tickets are $15, and available online, at the OSF Box Office or by phone at 800-219-8161.

 • Save the date for our annual Juneteenth celebrating, taking place June 19 on the OSF campus! Juneteenth is the oldest-known commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States, and OSF has celebrated Juneteenth since 1998, when actor Aldo Billingslea hosted a fundraising barbecue to help African-American students attend the annual Summer Seminar for High School Juniors. The Juneteenth Scholarship Fund was created for that purpose.
