March featured the exciting launch of Soundpost: abridged, a short, sweet and interactive take on the original Soundpost series!
Soundpost: abridged kicked off with an engaging discussion on how to spot the sparkle within a score. Michael Manning, manager of audio media and operations for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association, walked through Schoenberg’s Transfigured Night to show how he and other members of the CSOA team uncover special moments hidden amongst the lines to create a truly special experience for CSO patrons watching CSOtv. Soundpost: abridged attendees even had the opportunity to mark up a score and find their own special moments in Transfigured Night. Thank you to all who attended!
Be sure to save the date for our next Soundpost: abridged event on May 2, before the Civic Orchestra of Chicago performance at Symphony Center.

Have you ever sat in Orchestra Hall (or any performance space, for that matter) and wondered why the room has a curve here, some fabric there and maybe a large, glass spaceship hanging over the stage? Dawn Schuette, partner at Threshold Acoustics, will look to answer all these questions and more as we aurally wander through the jewel of Symphony Center, highlighting the architectural interventions of the 1997 renovation and what makes Orchestra Hall sound the way it does today. Stay tuned for more details!

Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes brings his “effortless command and penetrating clarity” (The New York Times) to Britten’s Piano Concerto, a glittering score composed during the lead-up to World War II. Riccardo Muti frames the program with Richard Strauss’ contemplative “Dreaming by the Fireside,” from his opera Intermezzo, and Schumann’s triumphant Fourth Symphony.
In his CSO debut, Klaus Mäkelä leads a journey through two Russian masterworks: Stravinsky’s sumptuous fairy-tale ballet The Firebird, and Prokofiev’s imaginative Second Violin Concerto, featuring Swedish phenom Daniel Lozakovich, also making his first appearance with the CSO. The program opens with Anders Hillborg’s Eleven Gates, a kaleidoscopic score that the Los Angeles Times calls “hugely entertaining, sonically enveloping music.”
