el automóvil gris

SUN, JUL 23 · 7:30PM

Named by Rolling Stone as one of their Top 20 Mexican artists breaking boundaries, this hard-hitting sextet from Guadalajara creates a relentlessly danceable amalgam of earth-deep grooves with serious jazz chops, mariachi flavors, power chords, and a scratching DJ. They perform their live soundtrack to a screening of the classic 1919 silent film El Automóvil Gris, or “The Grey Car.”

SUN RA ARKESTRA

Sun Ra Arkestra

THU-SUN, AUG 3-6
OPEN DANCE FLOOR

The enduring legacy of jazz visionary and legendary eccentric Sun Ra is celebrated by this ensemble made up of Arkestra veterans and a younger generation of exploratory musicians led by saxophonist Marshall Allen – a fixture of Sun Ra’s bands since 1958. Sun Ra created an entire universe of expression, integrating Ellington-influenced big band swing with free jazz, the blues, electronics, and African musical traditions while establishing a singular visual style that combined futuristic concepts with ancient Egyptian iconography. His Arkestra continues this mission, needed now more than ever.

Kid Koala

'Nufonia Must Fall'

THU-SUN, AUG 10-13

World renowned Montreal-based DJ and composer presents his revolutionary show, mixing live, projected puppeteers and music in an enchanting adaptation of his futuristic graphic novel about a music-loving robot falling in love. Kid Koala performs a live soundtrack using keyboards, electric ukulele, turntables, percussion and sound effects while the animated story is projected live on a large screen. The Guardian calls the performance “emotionally stirring, then lighthearted and humorous, pulling together musical references as varied as the Psycho soundtrack and Duke Ellington.”
