HoMA AND POLYNESIAN VOYAGING SOCIETY CELEBRATE OCEAN CULTURE JULY 20  

At Family Sunday guests can paint with ocean water, learn about navigation and see a documentary about Hōkūle‘a

HONOLULU, HAWAI‘I— As part of programming for its Honolulu Surf Film Festival, which screens through Aug. 3, the Honolulu Museum of Art partners with the Polynesian Voyaging Society for its quarterly Family Sunday event on July 20.

The day is a celebration of ocean culture and PVS’s 50th anniversary. Activities and performances are held 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the Museum remains open until 6 p.m.

Guests can make art from marine debris with NOAA, paint with ocean water with the guidance of Hōkūle‘a crew member and artist Hana Yoshihata, learn how to cleat and tie knots with the Kānehūnāmoku Academy, and hear Hōkūle‘a crew member Kanako Uchino read her children’s book Stars, Ocean and Voyaging Canoe accompanied by Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra cellist Josh Nakazawa.

At 2 p.m. the documentary Hōkūle‘a: Finding the Language of the Navigator screens for free in the Museum’s Doris Duke Theatre.

HoMA Family Sunday is free for Hawai‘i residents with ID.

And of course, visitors can explore 5,000 years of art in the galleries and have a delicious lunch in the HoMA Café. Now on view at the Museum are the exhibitions Mary Cassatt at Work and Franco Salmoiraghi: Photographs of Hawai‘i from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. It is also the last day to see Satoru Abe: Reaching for the Sun.

Admission: Adults $25; residents $15; free for youth 18 and under; free for SNAP beneficiaries and college students enrolled at any Hawai‘i state university or college.
