Grants Office Webinar: Using Grants Office Feedback
Thursday, July 16 - Webinar: 2 to 2:30 p.m. The mission of the Grants Office is to fund as many good history and historic preservation projects as possible. To help that happen, we as staff reviewers send back written comments for any unfunded small application and for any large pre-application. These comments can help you write an application with a better chance of success. How can you use these comments to strengthen your proposal rewrite? Why do we send you the information we send? Virtual Pub Crawl
July 9 - Online: 7 p.m. (CDT): Blue Earth County Historical Society - Grab a bite to eat and a drink and join in for a Virtual Pub Crawl. Discover some pub history as well as connect with fellow pub enthusiasts. This month, they will showcase pubs from Mankato’s past. Labor History Film Series
July 10 - Online: 7 p.m. East Side Freedom Library is introducing a monthly Labor History Film Series, on the second Friday night of each month. They will begin by premiering the films on our Facebook page and YouTube channel. Their first film is "1877: The Grand Army of Starvation," which tells the story of our first nationwide general strike. At the depths of a prolonged depression, railroad workers responded to yet another wage cut by going on strike, blocking trains, and confronting federal troops who were sent to put down the strike. Steve Brier, who was the founding Executive Director of the American Social History Project, will join in for the post-film discussion. Learn more »
Exhibit Extended
Through August 23 - Winona: Winona County Historical Society - "Winona Wildflowers of the Upper Midwest" is an exhibition drawn from a collection of over 150 watercolor paintings created by Lydia Curtis. She created these pictures between 1958 and 1973, finding specimens near her home in St. Paul and then later Morris, MN. Thirty-two of them are on exhibit at the History Center.
War, Flu, & Fear: World War I and Clay County
Through December 31 - Moorhead: Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County - Focusing on the Irish-Catholic Mastersons of Barnesville and the Norwegian-NPLer Thortvedt family of Glyndon, but drawing on stories throughout the county, War, Flu, and Fear frames WWI from a local perspective and explores life in Clay County and the Red River Valley only 100 years ago, on the local front at the dawn of the American century. Preserving Cultural Landscapes

Untold Stories - The panelists will focus on the landscape of the state now known as Utah, a place that has been shaped by many histories of use as well as violence. Emergency Planning course from FAIC:
September 14 - November 20 - Online: Conservation professionals often work in institutions with emergency plans, but those plans are not always up-to-date. There is a need for resources to assess, update, and revise plans, as well as to help create and implement training materials. This course allows and encourages professionals from collecting institutions to not only update their emergency plans, but to ensure that staff is trained to implement the plans in the case of an event. August 1 - (Deadline): Winona Community Foundation - The 2020 cycle 2 community grants have been adapted in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and current community needs. They ask that the grant request meet one of these criteria: 1. Loss of earned income directly tied to COVID-19 implications. This can be loss of fundraising event or appeal income, loss of grant income or loss of program earned income. 2. Increased need directly tied to COVID-19 implications, i.e. serving more clients, intaking more clients, needing to hire staff, etc.

Bell Museum Wins National Conservation Award
Bell Museum, Minnesota’s official museum of natural history, is a American Institute for Conservation’s 2020 Award Recipient with the Ross Merrill Award.
The Ross Merrill Award is given for Outstanding Commitment to the Preservation and Care of Collections for organizations that have been exemplary in the importance and priority they have given to conservation concerns and in the commitment they have shown to the preservation and care of their cultural property.
As part of the City of Winona's efforts to educate and combat COVID-19, the City asks its citizens to post a selfie wearing a face mask with their reason for wearing it. Mayor (and Winona County Historical Society Director) Mark Peterson states, "To protect myself and others. It’s the right thing to do."
