Renowned contemporary artist Kevin Sampson is bringing his radical craft to Mystic Seaport Museum. Join Kevin in his "pop-up" art studio behind the Membership Building and watch him create a new piece for the exhibition of his works currently on display in the C.D. Mallory Building.
Kevin uses a unique artistic practice in which he transforms found materials such as cement, bones, tiles, fabric, paints, and wood into powerful sculptures. His piece USS Kye Kye Kule, uses a donated Bevin's skiff as its foundation, and he is culling items from across the Museum grounds to make it.
Kevin's residency at the Museum began Saturday and runs through Saturday, July 14. The exhibition, Monument Man, will be open in the C.D. Mallory Building through Spring 2019.

Meet the Museum’s first artist-in-residence, Kevin Sampson, the nationally renowned artist from Newark, N.J., who transforms found materials such as cement, bones, tiles, fabric, paints, and wood into powerful sculptures that speak to family, memory, and loss through the lens of the African-American experience. Then enjoy Sounds Great, a quartet from the Eastern CT Symphony Orchestra that will perform Mozart, Beethoven, jazz works by Ellington and Gershwin, Sea Songs, and other musical delights.

Join us for the Antique & Classic Boat Rendezvous, a dazzling display of high-quality antique and classic vessels including cruisers, sailboats, and runabouts. An award competition recognizes excellence in restoration, authenticity, and workmanship. Approximately 35 classic vessels create a colorful gathering along the Museum’s waterfront all day Saturday and Sunday morning.
And of course don't miss the parade down the Mystic River on Sunday!
Join us as we celebrate America’s birthday circa 1876!
The day begins with boat races on the river and, new this year, a pedestrian walking race around the Green. From military exercises with the “boys in blue” to an old-fashioned spelling bee for children, the fun continues throughout the day! Play croquet with residents of 1876 Mystic and watch live theatrical performances by the Tale-Makers. Everybody can help churn ice cream and reap the delicious rewards.
Enjoy the Museum's 4th of July festivities with a delicious bite to eat at Latitude 41º, located steps from the patriotic celebrations. Dine on fresh lobster rolls in true New England fashion and share a classically American dessert of apple pie. With longer seasonal hours in full swing, the rest of the summer will be filled with late-night bottles of wine and unforgettable times on our waterfront patio.
