SCOTTSDALE PUBLIC ART

An Amazing Month of Activities

Scottsdale Public Art has an exciting November planned, including new kinetic and interactive artworks installed in downtown Scottsdale, free artist talks and the opening event of IN FLUX Cycle 7, a multi-city temporary art initiative.

The first installation by Scottsdale Public Art for Canal Convergence 2018 will be Reflection Rising by Poetic Kinetics. This installation’s stunning display of color and light will soar over the Arizona Canal system beginning Nov. 13 through March of 2018. Reflection Rising artist Patrick Shearn will give a FREE artist talk on Thursday, Nov. 16 from 6–8 p.m. at the Casablanca Rooftop Lounge at the Scottsdale Waterfront.

Nine additional art installations will be erected in Scottsdale and four other cities in the Valley for IN FLUX Cycle, a temporary public art program. IN FLUX SLIDE SLAM! featuring presentations by all nine artists happens on Saturday, Nov. 18 from 3–5 p.m. in SMoCA Lounge.

As the month of November draws to a close, Scottsdale Public Art presents PRISMATICA, an interactive installation and one of the highlights of Scottsdale’s month-long Scottsdazzle! celebration. This light-and-sound-based installation features uniquely colorful reflections made by 25 revolving prism sculptures.

Giving back through the arts with Alli Ortega Empty Bowls 2017

This year, the Scottsdale Arts Education & Outreach team collaborated with over 500 participants, from preschool-age students to seniors, to create ceramic and mixed media bowls for Alli Ortega Empty Bowls. This event, a partnership between Scottsdale Unified Schools, Scottsdale Arts, City of Scottsdale agencies, Scottsdale Community Partners and Scottsdale Community College donates all proceeds from the sale to Scottsdale Community Partners, benefiting Vista del Camino Social Services. Dedicated to the spirit of volunteerism, the event is named in memory of the late Alli Ortega, a beloved local artist, City of Scottsdale employee, and loyal Empty Bowls volunteer.

The partnership was featured on the front page of the Scottsdale Independent

The handcrafted bowls will be available for sale in the Student Center Cafeteria at Scottsdale Community College on Wednesday, Nov. 29 from 11 a.m.–6 p.m. If you cannot attend this event, bowls will be on sale at select performances throughout the holiday season at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts.

SMoCA

Soleri Exhibition Panel Discussions

SMoCA’s exhibition Repositioning Paolo Soleri: The City Is Nature represents the culmination of SMoCA’s nearly decade-long engagement organizing a series of three museum shows and producing a scholarly exhibition catalogue to influence the national conversation about the pioneering Arizona architect. Claire C. Carter, Curator of Contemporary Art led this multiyear project, working in the Cosanti Foundation’s archives and collections. Her research unearthed a number of remarkable objects, including architectural models and scroll drawings that were conserved and stored for a number of years at SMoCA.

Thursday, Nov. 9, 7 p.m.  Paolo Soleri and the Counterculture. Scholars and curators Larry Busbea, Elissa Auther and Garth Johnson discuss Soleri’s impact on 1960s-70s counterculture, ecology and American craft.

Thursday, Dec. 7, 7 p.m.  Preserving Paolo Soleri’s Legacy. Cosanti Foundation Co-President Jeff Stein, former State Historic Preservation Officer Jim Garrison, and SMoCA Director and Chief Curator Sara Cochran tackle the future conservation of Soleri’s work.

Thursday, Jan. 11, 7 p.m.  Paolo Soleri as Visionary. Claire C. Carter moderates a conversation between scholar Jonathon Keats and architect Will Bruder about Soleri’s position among mid-century visionary architects.

Given that this rich topic merits additional conversation, SMoCA has organized a series of panel discussions:
