Membership: "The best thing ever: it's Christmas come early"

Did you know that the word for working frantically to a deadline having done no work for the entire month before is Shturmovshchina? Or that almost any domestic cat can outrun Usain Bolt?

These were just two of the entertaining snippets we heard from The Horologicon and QI authors at our Members' Christmas Shopping Evening in the wonderfully festive Cheltenham Waterstones store.

With plenty of mulled wine, live music and festival cheer, it was fantastic to see so many of you there. Thank you to Waterstones for such a great night - and for getting our Christmas shopping started with a special Members' discount. Watch the video

It could only happen at a Festival...
Festival teams reveal their 2012 surprises

As the site was closing down on the last day of the Literature Festival, I had to try to frantically clear-up all of the hidden "Where's Wally" treasure trail items myself! Some were concealed rather too well..."
Hannah Evans, Literature Festival Assistant

"I arrived at the Jazz Festival Box Office to find the person waiting to speak to me was none other than news-legend Moira Stuart, who was politely chatting to some enthusiastic fans. It was great to see her enjoying the Festival and dancing the night away at The Speakeasy."
Phil Woods, Jazz Festival Manager

“I was really excited to be bringing a MRI scanner to the Science Festival. Everything was fine until we realised that it could potentially crash through the Town Hall floor! A bit of strategic mapping later and we were given the all clear - such a relief."
Ashley Kent, Science Festival Manager

“We weren't expecting a call from the airport on the first day of the Music Festival to say that our orchestra from Singapore had invited some friends and weren't going to fit on our two 56 seater coaches! A quick dash up the M5 swiftly followed..."
Alexis Paterson, Music Festival Manager

it's been a good 2012 for...

It's been a stellar year for Music Festival artists: pianist Benjamin Grosvenor, who's won the Diapason d'Or Award for most talented young artist; the Critics' Award at the Classic BRITAwards, and two Gramophone Awards, making him the youngest ever double award winner.

Guitarist Miloš Karadaglic also saw success at the Classic BRITs when he was named MasterCard Breakthrough Artist of the Year, and librettist Jeet Thayli had his novel Narcopolis shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize for Fiction.

Thomas Tallis' 40 part motet Spem in Alium (which I Fagiolini performed to a sold out Tewkesbury Abbey this summer) also had a great year, topping the charts as readers of the bestselling Fifty Shades of Grey rushed out to discover the music featured in the book. Hear the group who performed the chart topping record for yourself next July when the Tallis Scholars give a 40th Anniversary concert at the Music Festival.

THINGS WE DIDN'T KNOW UNTIL 2012
Five discoveries from Science 2012:

Cows may be able to sense tectonic plate movement.
28 seconds is the world record time for solving a Rubik's cube - whilst blindfolded.
Meditation can reduce the sensation of pain.
Some people can't recognise their friends and family.
Serve whisky with water, but never on the rocks.

Education: Petrol, ping-pong balls, calories & cookies
...what do they all have in common? Energy!

550 Year 8 & 9 students took part in the Science Festival's very own version of The Christmas Lectures earlier this month as part of our year-round educational programme that involves nearly 25,000 school children.

With plenty of fire, bangs and crashes, FameLabber Jamie Gallagher used burning food and bouncing balls to show what energy is and why we can't create or destroy it.
