Maida Hundeling as Salome

Oct. 17, 2013

Maestro David Stern on Salome

Our production of Salome will be conducted by Maestro David Stern, who noted on the first day of rehearsal that while it is easy to draw the gorgeous colours out in the music, it is more challenging — and more interesting — to take care of the details that really add depth to the opera.

"The wild elements of the story are enveloped in a music so rapturous and seductive that the audience cannot help but be captivated by what they hear and see," Stern said. "Strauss is the master psychologist and he portrays intricate characters with brilliant colours. You don't need to be an expert on opera to delight in the work, all you need is to come and let yourself be amazed."

Maida Hundeling returns to Edmonton

The vocal demands of the role of Salome require a high, dramatic soprano, and German artist Maida Hundeling has the stamina and power to sing over a tumultuous orchestra for the hour and a half duration of the opera.Last heard on Edmonton Opera's stage in April 2012, Maida Hundeling took a similar, powerful approach to her Fidelio character.

Tickets are selling quickly for all three performances of Salome, Oct. 26 (8 p.m.), Oct. 29 (7:30 p.m.) and Oct. 31 (7:30 p.m.) at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium. Call the box office at 780.429.1000, or purchase online. Tickets for the main floor start at $40!

Salome as a Halloween date night

Join us for a Halloween date night at the opera! For the Oct. 31 performance of Salome (7:30 p.m.), we invite you to wear your Halloween costume (no hats, please). Those who come in costume will be eligible to win tickets to our next production, Die Fledermaus  in February 2014.

Richard Strauss' Salome has a scandalous, seductive and shocking libretto, set to a score that is intense and beautifully composed. We look forward to seeing you at the Jubilee for any of the three performances (Oct. 26, 29 or 31) for this psychological thriller!
