Meredith writes from Spain on the #DanceMotionUSA tour

Hubbard Street's on tour through Morocco, Spain and Algeria through DanceMotion USA, a cultural diplomacy program of the US Department of State and Brooklyn Academy of Music. Hubbard Street Dancer  Meredith Dincolo  blogged about her experiences  in Spain and Morocco before traveling to Algeria for the final leg of the company’s voyage:

We're about to leave Spain. Our time in Seville brought us to a center where we taught a group of dancers with Down syndrome—they were amazing! Open and creative and free, they completely changed our expectations. And the high school we visited brought to both sides a new experience.

One of the hardest days was when a group of us went to a school here in Valencia where the students were mostly of Roma descent, we were told. The kids were rowdy and restless, and it was not an easy workshop. Before we finished, we showed them a bit of what we do, and the payoff came when they shared their talents. Two young brothers (I think) were drumming and singing, and girls were dancing, and they became their own cultural ambassadors for a moment. Not to be forgotten.

So today we head to Algeria, where the experience will be yet different, I imagine. The students in our workshops have been selected to participate, so they've all been open and voluntary thus far. Wondering why, and how this will go. The long sleeves and scarves will come out again, and our activities will be chaperoned, guiding us through this last part of our adventure with DanceMotion USA. Can’t wait. —Meredith Dincolo

When Classics Come Again

On Picasso’s modern responses to classic artworks

Did you know that the Art Institute of Chicago was the first museum in the U.S. to present the work of a certain up-and-coming Spanish artist named Pablo Picasso?

This year marks the 100th anniversary of that historic debut.

Join a special group of Hubbard Street 2 and main company dancers this Thursday, April 18, to explore how Picasso's groundbreaking work revisits and reinvents the classics.

Sponsor Spotlight: ACME Hotel

You have a dance company coming to stay with you. Where do you put them all?

Hubbard Street enjoys having houseguests. International choreographers stay with us all the time. But when a choreographer brings his entire dance company with him, a few air mattresses on the studio floor just won’t do. Last month, as the Chicago premiere of a groundbreaking collaboration approached, we turned to our Preferred Hotel Partner for help with a serious challenge.

Alonzo King LINES Ballet traveled from San Francisco to perform alongside Hubbard Street at the Harris Theater, in AZIMUTH, the culmination of our two-year artistic collaboration. Housing became an issue handily solved by ACME Hotel Company, which generously provided accommodations in their exquisite, downtown Chicago boutique hotel. The artfully designed, high-tech rooms gave LINES Ballet’s dancers a comfortable retreat from the rigors of rehearsal — with the excitement of the Magnificent Mile just steps away.

LINES Ballet dancers, Alonzo King and the AZIMUTH creative team checked in a few days before our Spring Series. ACME’s expert staff welcomed them as VIPs, and made everyone feel at home.

We salute ACME Hotel Company for helping us solve a major issue in high style. Not only did they house LINES Ballet throughout the Spring Series — and master choreographer Mats Ek during our Winter Series in December — they promoted our shared performances on social media, offered generous discounts on rooms for our patrons and subscribers, and rewarded lucky guests with tickets to AZIMUTH’s Chicago premiere.

Corporate relationships are crucial to Hubbard Street’s success and we cherish all of our preferred partners, like ACME Hotel Company, who step up when visionary work needs tangible support. When we partner with Chicago businesses, our affluent patrons see how vital these friendships are — how they allow us to be Chicago’s international destination for dance.
