It was so hard for us to keep this a secret!

We’ve been chuckling to ourselves for months — giggling in the studio, sneaking back and forth between Hubbard Street’s West Loop facility and The Second City’s theaters and offices in Old Town.

We couldn’t hold it in any longer and so, on February 4, we held a press conference to announce “the city’s worst-kept secret.”

Wow: It sure feels good to finally talk (and laugh) out loud about this exciting collaboration!

This fall, we’ll open our 2014–15 season with The Second City, Chicago’s world-famous sketch comedy company. The Second City Guide to Dance premieres October 16–19 at the Harris Theater in Millennium Park

Extra! Extra!
Read all about it:

Chicago Tribune
"The show will use dancers from both Hubbard Street and Hubbard Street 2 in all aspects of the creative process, working with Second City cast members."

Chicago Sun-Times
"Now, in this city where improvisation is part of the cultural DNA, [The Second City] is planning to mix it up once again – this time by joining forces with Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, the internationally acclaimed contemporary dance company."

Time Out Chicago
"Second City writers Kate James, Tim Mason and Carisa Barreca and director Billy Bungeroth will work with Hubbard Street dancers to devise the production."

DNAinfo Chicago
"According to [The Second City Executive Vice President Kelly] Leonard, it's not the first collaboration between the two companies. He said Hubbard Street founder Lou Conte taught Bill Murray how to tap dance."

Chicagoist
"While [the collaboration is] still very much in the beginning stages, we got to take a look at what they're working on last night and as you might expect, we're in for some laughs."

Fox 32's "Good Day Chicago"
Watch Tribune comedy columnist Jason Heidemann discuss our big news with anchor Melody Mendez.

Dance Spirit Magazine
"We, like most dance people, love drama. We’re all about dying swans and moody contemporary duets.  Let’s face it, though: Sometimes dance is even better when it’s funny. Any kind of funniness is awesome, but bodies being funny is one of the best kinds of funny there is."

“All of us here at Hubbard Street are so excited about this project, for so many reasons. We have a deep commitment to innovation in contemporary dance, and many of our works created in-house, by company artists or guest choreographers, are devised in collaboration in ways quite similar to how The Second City’s members create their shows. Improvisation is a key part of our DNA on both sides. So it’s a natural fit for us to join forces and I’m thrilled to watch this project make its way to the stage.” —Glenn Edgerton, Hubbard Street Artistic Director

“Our project with Lyric Opera was so creatively inspiring — not to mention such a business success — that our team met to discuss what other artistic mash-ups might be similarly satisfying. The first idea proposed was that we collaborate with contemporary dancers, and Hubbard Street was the overwhelming choice for this partnership. The fact that Hubbard Street’s team had the exact same idea at the same time only proves that some projects are meant to be.” —Kelly Leonard, The Second City Executive Vice President

Major support for this project is provided by Jack and Sandy Guthman through the Imagine Campaign at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance, with additional funding from The Walter E. Heller Foundation.
