Ria Mooney and Sean O'Casey during rehearsals for The Plough and the Stars (1926)

8 February 1926

Abbey,

Today is the 90th anniversary of the world premiere of The Plough and the Stars.

It was first performed in 1926, less than ten years after the Easter Rising. On the night of the fourth performance, the Abbey Company was met by an unruly audience who protested against what they believed was a grotesque distortion of historical events slandering those who had died for Ireland.

Now regarded as a masterpiece, this provocative play is an essential part of our understanding of 1916.
