FOUR DIFFERENT SHOWS!
Five-time GRAMMY winning bassist Christian McBride is widely regarded as the standard-bearer for jazz bassists in the 21st century, and is among the most recorded artists of his generation. As an SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director, McBride presents a unique week of concerts you'll only see at SFJAZZ featuring four different projects over four nights!
Called "the best and most well-known saxophonists consistently active on both coasts” by the L.A. Weekly, Wendel gained notice as a founding member of the prolific and pervasively influential jazz-and-beyond band Kneebody, and most recently the Brainfeeder (Flying Lotus' Label) electronic-jazz group Kneedelus. The saxophonist is joined by an incredible band featuring some of the best rising stars in jazz including pianist Gerald Clayton (Charles Lloyd, Roy Hargrove), bassist Joe Sanders (Charles Lloyd, Kendrick Scott), and drummer Henry Cole (Miguel Zenón, Alfredo Rodríguez). The ensemble debuts on Wendel’s new Motéma album What We Bring.
One of jazz’s living masters pays tribute to the legendary Bill Evans with former Evans bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer Brian Blade. The trio will be performing music from Corea's 2012 Further Explorations recording which features Bill Evans compositions and standards inextricably linked to the pianist. The album was recorded with Evans alums Gomez and the late jazz legend Paul Motion on drums. Blade, who a member of the trio with Christian McBride that earned Corea his 22nd Grammy Award last year, takes over on drums.
The GRAMMY-winning pianist revisits his most ambitious project, Highway Rider. Produced by composer Jon Brion(Paul Thomas Anderson's Magnolia, & Punch-Drunk Love, as well as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), the BBC described this conceptual composition as "Mehldau’s epic or saga-like statement...
a concept album with an odyssey-like subtext." This rarely performed suite will feature an incredible all-star lineup that includes saxophonist Joshua Redman, bassist Larry Grenadier,
drummers Jeff Ballard and Mark Guiliana, as well as a 28-peice orchestra. This groundbreaking work has only been performed four times previously and this will be the first and possibly only time the music will be performed in the Bay Area.
