2019-20 SEASON | VIEW CALENDAR
SFJAZZ's resident all-star octet celebrates the 50th Anniversary of two essential 1969 albums, Sly & The Family Stone’s Stand! and Miles Davis’ In A Silent Way. Released by a pair of artists connected by mutual respect and inspiration, both highly influential albums were beacons of hope during a turbulent time in American history, and helped push jazz, funk, and soul music into new directions.
Tigran Hamasyan is one of his generation’s most celebrated pianists. His extraordinary albums document his ever-deepening engagement with Armenian folk music, including a stimulating pair of releases for the ECM label – 2015’s Luys i Luso, and 2016’s Atmosphères.
Israeli trumpeter and former SFJAZZ Collective member Avishai Cohen performs music from his two recent ECM releases, while jazz legend and trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith presents the world premiere of Appassionata, a multi-movement work focusing on Anita Hill, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and more.
Pianist/ composer Vijay Iyer’s longstanding trio has been his most acclaimed ensemble project for over a decade, called “the great new jazz trio” by The New York Times, and has been named DownBeat’s "Jazz Artist of the Year," "Group of the Year," and "Pianist of the Year" numerous times.
While recording often for EMI, Gismonti has earned a vast international following through his work for ECM since the 1970s. An influential composer, multi-instrumental wizard, and skilled improviser, the Brazilian guitarist/ pianist draws on a multitude of folkloric styles, creating music that’s both supremely sophisticated and bracingly rustic.
Pianist Shai Maestro performs material from his 2018 ECM debut The Dream Thief with his trio featuring bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Ofri Nehemya. All About Jazz states that "hearing Shai Maestro is like awakening to a new world."
Bassist Larry Grenadier is among the most respected and in-demand instrumentalists in jazz, a 25-year veteran of pianist Brad Mehldau’s epochal trio. He performs material from his 2019 ECM solo bass album The Gleaners.
Perhaps best known for his career with the landmark fusion groups Weather Report and Steps Ahead, the hugely influential, GRAMMY-winning drummer and composer performs material from his highly regarded ECM albums of the 1990s.
Named for the trumpeter's 2007 album This Against That, a recording that made JazzTimes magazine’s Top 10 for the year, the quintet features an impressive cast of New York’s most exploratory musicians.
Created by 10-time Latin GRAMMY winning musician and producer Javier Limón, The Paco de Lucía Project reassembles the final band that toured with the legendary flamenco guitarist for the last 10 years of his career before his death in 2014.
