Utah Opera is looking for storytellers, writers, and composers!

In celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Transcontinental Railroad, Utah Opera seeks 3-4 composer-librettist teams to create 10-minute operas on themes of transportation, immigration, or [loco]motion. The operas will be staged and premiered in May 2019, and then performed in community concerts and random acts of opera over the next few seasons. Utah Opera is interested in telling diverse stories; therefore, individuals from historically underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply. Writers and composers may apply individually or as a team.

Application deadline: July 23, 2018

Apply for consideration with the following materials:

  • Synopsis of story, fewer than 250 words
  • Outline of performance needs
  • 1-3 samples of work (audio/video and scores from composer; short writing samples from librettists)
  • One member of the team must be current or former Utah resident

Each chosen team will receive a $2000 honorarium and will receive a video recording of the premiere performance.
