YOU dance visits Sault Ste. Marie

At the beginning of October, YOU dance travelled to Sault Ste. Marie to participate in the Algoma Fall Festival. YOU dance presented three performances for elementary schools, one public performance and one master ballet class for the community. Our educators held 32 workshops in schools and a choreographic residency which culminated in the wonderful dance piece being presented at the public performance. Our hosts were most accommodating and the audience response enthusiastic as they watched and became involved in the dances on the stage.

“Our 2 classes (4/5 and 5/6) loved the YOU dance workshop. The teachers loved it and the students were really engaged. She got grade 6 boys doing Swan Lake and they did not even realize it!!!!” Connie Traves, Principal, H.M.Robbins Public School, Sault Ste. Marie.

YOU Ask

Student and teachers can send questions to any of our YOU dance performers to youdance@national.ballet.ca.  Your question may be featured in one of our upcoming newsletters.

We asked Jack Bertinshaw: What it is like rehearsing with the big company after his experience with the ten dancers of YOU dance?

Having lived in Australia, Japan and Switzerland, I love exploring new cities and immersing myself into the culture of a new country. The people of Toronto are so welcoming and that has made my move here so much easier – it is a very beautiful city.

I am honoured to be a part of The National Ballet of Canada. Taking class with the company and rehearsing the repertoire is inspiring. I enjoy working alongside some of the most talented dancers in the world.

YOU Move

Sometimes ballet dancers learn new dance movements or styles that are practiced in other countries and cultures from all over the world. The YOU dance dancers learned the very detailed movements and signature steps from India for the energetic Bollywood dance they performed.

With your students you can make your own dance to a Bollywood song.  Divide students in groups of four and ask them to come up with four movements that tell a story.  Form a longer sequence of movement by having one group perform their four movements after the other.  Finish with everyone skipping in any direction to find a finishing pose.

YOU Explore

In the YOU dance workshop we explore the classic story of Swan Lake by dancing at different levels to portray each character.  Explore another story with your class and create a descriptive list of ways that they might imagine the characters moving.  Make a chart of verbs (action and dance vocabulary) and adjectives (quality of movement) that were used to describe the characters in the story.
