Art & the F-Word, 2016-17 College Arts Fellows Discussion

Failure. Fiction. Futility. Fun. Fruition. Fame. Foolishness. Fakery. Finitude. Felicity. Fear. Fugue. Flirtation. Form. Futurity. Fad. Fantasy. Feeling. Ferality. Fetish. Fermentation. Figuration. Filth. Fragment. Freedom. Fulfillment. Fire. Faith. A prism of “f” words related to the praxis and production of art offers an avenue into a conversation among the 2016/2017 Faculty Arts Fellows about the “so what?” of the arts, within and outside the academy. The discussion will be followed by a free reception at 6:15.

The New Sound In Our Streets-Benjamin C. Howland Memorial Lecture by Garnette Cadogan

This talk will be a meditation, aided by the voices of poets, essayists, novelists, and other close noticers of our world, that will invite us to be better listeners in public space. As Richard Wilbur suggested, “Let the new sound in our streets be the patient sound of your discourse.”

Best New Poets is an annual anthology of fifty poems from emerging writers. The anthology began in 2005 under series editor Jeb Livingood with George Garrett serving as the first guest editor. The book is currently distributed nationally as a University of Virginia Press title and produced in cooperation with Meridian, a semiannual literary magazine from the University of Virginia.

Kicking off the VFF at Violet Crown Series is a reprise screening of the Oscar-nominated Fire at Sea. The documentary, which was an audience favorite at the 2016 Virginia Film Festival, brings to light relevant discussions on current immigration issues.

John Arnold is a UVA alumnus, Studio Art/English, 1998 and is a painter, mixed media and conceptual artist,  Christian Jankowski works span film, video, photography, performance, painting and sculpture. Both artists have gained international recognition for their work.

As part of the residency of the creators of Les Misérables and Miss Saigon, Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg, UVA will offer a screening of the recent London stage production, “Miss Saigon." The screening includes a special finale, with the anniversary cast joined on stage by original cast members.

As part of the research roundtable series, join us to hear Jennifer Reut, graduate of the UVA Art & Architectural History PhD and Senior Editor at Landscape Architecture Magazine, speak on her project Mapping the Green Book. The Green Book was a national guide for black travelers published annually between 1936 and 1964.

It’s kinda like the chili cook-offs you know about, but with a twist. Your ticket supports excellent community radio and gets you: 1) Tastings of all the soups from both amateur chefs and local restaurants, 2) A lineup of great music sets, and 3) a commemorative soup bowl to take home with you (for the first 100 attendees).
