Meteor event at the Charterhouse
The Meteor Board recently held an evening's entertainment at the Charterhouse. Baritone Thomas Humphreys performed accompanied by Patrick Milne on piano in the Great Chamber where Elizabeth I held court before her coronation. The Meteor's also heard about next year’s exciting programme from founder Wasfi Kani and conductor Stephen Barlow, and how the Meteor scheme for under 35's is evolving.
Breathtaking new aerial film of West Horsley Place
Glowing brick façades, framed by antique box hedges and walled gardens, sit in the midst of a 350-acre estate slumbering in the Surrey countryside. Behind the house, an ancient orchard opens into a wooded glade, which is to become the setting for a new cultural venue, the Theatre in the Woods. Here Grange Park Opera will realise the next chapter in its quest to make world-class performing art accessible to all.

Staggering progress of the new opera house
"With even a small portion of the 6 miles of steel frame in place, just a large hole in the clay and the horseshoe of the auditorium so far defined by foundations in plan only, the impact of the hole is upon you. It is now possible, with a smidgeon of imagination, to sense the presence of the new opera house occupying the clearing that we made so recently in the woods." - David Lloyd Jones, consultant architect.
Watch the progress so far from July to September.
A casket of the Duchess's ashes
On the 13th September the Duchess's
ashes were laid to rest on the concrete floor of the orchestra pit under the
first violins. In attendance was a suitable gathering of luminaries from the
two charities - the Mary Roxburghe Trust and Grange Park Opera - including the Duchess’s
nephew, Bamber Gascoigne. The Duchess, Mary Crewe-Milnes
(1915-2014), was a god-daughter of Queen Mary, after whom she was named.

Discover The Charterhouse
Grange Park Opera had the pleasure of hosting a Meteor event at this magnificent building. The Charterhouse is a former Carthusian monastery in London, to the north of what is now Charterhouse Square. Since the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th century the house has served as private mansion, a boys’ school and an almshouse, which it remains to this day. Visit this historic site on pre-booked tours or hire areas for private events.
