Puccini's magnum opus opens this Saturday at the Jubilee!

The wait is almost over — Edmonton Opera's production of Turandot arrives at the Jubilee in just a few days! This production exemplifies everything audiences love about opera, including its lavish designs, electrifying drama, and of course, Puccini's soul-stirring music. As this year's most anticipated theatrical event, it is no wonder that Turandot is selling out fast. If you haven't already booked your tickets, now is the time!

Reasons to look forward to Turandot

There are a great many reasons to get excited about our production of Puccini's epic final masterpiece! Here are just a few:

  • Puccini's music — with a huge orchestra to perform this extensive score, Turandot includes Puccini's innovative use of percussions and Chinese melodies; you will be treated to one of the most stunning compositions in opera history.
  • Lavish production design — to complement the music, the scenery and costumes in this production are larger than life. There's even a dragon on stage!
  • Turandot also has the largest cast of performers we have seen in years; over 80 people will fill the Jubilee stage including our principals, chorus, children's chorus, and supers! Watch this rehearsal snippet to see our massive chorus in action!
  • Our production marks the Canadian debut of Othalie Graham as Turandot. This powerhouse dramatic soprano has made her mark across the United States and beyond, wowing audiences with her signature interpretation of the icy princess.
  • There are funny moments too! Despite the drama and showdowns in this opera, Puccini revives the Italian tradition of commedia dell'arte through the mischievous, clown-like characters of Ping, Pang, and Pong.

Message from the Conductor

Internationally renowned conductor David Stern joins us for this orchestrally opulent production of Turandot. Stern was last here with 2013's Salome, and is thrilled to return to Edmonton with Puccini's "most expressionist" score.

Read our blog to learn Stern's thoughts on Puccini's final opera, including his understanding of Turandot's unique music that would have been the beginning of a whole new Puccini era.
