The sole surviving trilogy in Greek tragedy, The Oresteia chronicles a deluge of pain that can only be stopped when society peers into its own soul and sees the depths of its complicity. Playwright Ellen McLaughlin (The Persians) has created a new version of the classic that weaves together the works of Aeschylus with stunning poetry and emotional heft.
On March 11, May 15 and June 3, join Artistic Director Michael Kahn and friends for a series of intimate conversations about life in the theatre. As Michael prepares to retire as Artistic Director after 33 years, he reflects and reminisces about his career with the artists who know him best, including Stacy Keach, Franchelle Stewart Dorn, Floyd King and more.

In Arlington, Virginia during the 1990s, playwright Adrienne Kennedy’s son was viciously beaten by police after being pulled over for a broken taillight. That disturbing incident led them, mother and child, to collaborate on this powerful, autobiographical drama. Sleep Deprivation Chamber reads now like a premonition of today’s pervasive climate of violence, masterfully interweaving a suspenseful docudrama with the black experience of 20th-century America.
Sleep Deprivation Chamber was originally directed by Michael Kahn in 1996 for Signature Theatre in New York. A sequel of sorts to Kennedy’s Funnyhouse of a Negro (also directed by Michael Kahn, and one of the founding texts of the Off-Broadway movement), Sleep Deprivation Chamber allows us to measure how far we’ve come and how much has remained the same.
