FORT WORTH, Texas, April 24, 2014—The Cliburn announces the line-up for 2014-2015 Cliburn Concerts, considered the premiere recital series in the DFW region. Subscriptions range from $40 to $270 and go on sale Thursday, April 24 at 10:00 a.m. at Cliburn.org or by calling 817.212.4450.

Italian pianist Beatrice Rana drew mass attention during the 2013 Cliburn Competition for “intensely personalized music-making” (Dallas Morning News) that “had an electrical current running through virtually every measure” (The Plain Dealer). Already a rising star, Ms. Rana was named “One to Watch” by International Piano magazine just before her Cliburn appearance. Recent and upcoming debuts include: Detroit Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Kennedy Center, and Paris’ Théâtre des Champs Élysées with conductors such as Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Miguel Harth-Bedoya, Leonard Slatkin, and Faycal Karoui.

Since his triumph at the 11th International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1998, Denis Matsuev has become a virtuoso in the grandest of Russian pianistic tradition and has quickly established himself as one of the prominent pianists of his generation. In addition to performing in recital in the international music capitals, he has performed with the world’s great orchestras, including the Chicago Symphony, London Symphony, Royal Concertgebouw, and all of the legendary Russian orchestras, and with master conductors such as Kurt Masur, Charles Dutoit, and Lorin Maazel. In 2010, the New York Philharmonic invited him as a leading soloist, under Valery Gergiev, in the orchestra’s 15,000th concert, and he was recently a featured performer during the 2014 Winter Olympic Games Closing Ceremony.

In 1973, Maestro John Giordano had just completed his first season as music director and conductor of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra—a position he held for the next 27 years—when he was called on to serve as jury chairman for the Fourth Cliburn Competition. For eleven quadrennial competitions and over 40 years, he performed that role with dignity, as an integral and invaluable part of the Cliburn family. He helped launch the careers of many, many young pianists, among those the eight who return this spring to pay tribute to him as he now becomes the Cliburn’s first chairman emeritus: Haochen Zhang, (2009 gold), Joyce Yang (2005 silver), Stanislav Ioudenitch (2001 gold), Jon Nakamatsu (1997 gold), Simone Pedroni (1993 gold), José Feghali (1985 gold), André-Michel Schub (1981 gold), and Vladimir Viardo (1973 gold).

French pianist David Fray was named “Newcomer of the Year 2008” by BBC Music Magazine. A frequent soloist with leading orchestras, he has collaborated with distinguished conductors such as Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Kurt Masur, Christoph Eschenbach, and Riccardo Muti, with recent highlights including performances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Cleveland and Boston Symphony Orchestras. He also maintains an active career as a recitalist, performing in the most important concert halls across Europe, Asia, and the Unites States, including the Louvre in Paris, Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and Carnegie Hall in New York. Welcome this phenomenal artist in his Cliburn Concerts debut.

From firmly American roots, Brownlee has become a star on the international scene, performing opposite the leading ladies of opera and lauded continually for the seemingly effortless beauty of his voice. He has been featured in nearly every major theater in the world and enjoys a relationship with many premiere conductors and symphony orchestras, and has performed recitals at the Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall, Grand Théâtre de Genève in Switzerland, and on London’s Rosenblatt Series.

Lowell Liebermann is one of America’s most frequently performed and recorded composers—a favorite among orchestras and distinguished artists worldwide. His compositions have been recorded and released by over 40 labels, and his Piano Concerto No. 2, performed by Stephen Hough and the BBC Scottish Symphony, was nominated for a Grammy®. He has served as composer-in-residence for many organizations, including the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Sapporo’s Pacific Music Festival, and the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, and won the Cliburn’s American Composers Invitational in 2001. He maintains an active performing schedule as pianist and conductor, in such venues as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, London’s Wigmore Hall, and the Berlin Philharmonie.

Mark Adamo

American composer-librettist Mark Adamo first attracted national attention with his uniquely celebrated début opera, Little Women, after the Alcott novel. Introduced by Houston Grand Opera in 1998, it is one of the most frequently performed American operas of the last 15 years, with more than 80 national and international engagements. While his principal work continues to be for the opera house (Lysistrata and The Gospel of Mary Magdalene), over the past five years he has ventured into chamber, symphonic, and choral composition; his first concerto, Four Angels, for harp and orchestra, was commissioned by the National Symphony Orchestra and debuted in June 2007.

The Cliburn advances classical piano music throughout the world. Its international competitions, education programs, and concert series embody an enduring commitment to artistic excellence and the discovery of new artists.

Established in 1962, the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition is widely-recognized as “one of the world’s highest-visibility classical-music contests” and remains committed to its original ideals of supporting and launching the careers of young pianists and sharing the transformative powers of music with a wide global audience. The Fourteenth Cliburn Competition, held May 24–June 9, 2013, in Fort Worth, Texas, welcomed 30 competitors, aged 19–30 and representing 13 nations. Beyond the over 40,000 who enjoyed the Competition in person at Bass Performance Hall, the fully-produced webcast streamed over 13 million minutes of video to more than 170,000 unique viewers in 155 countries.

In addition to cash and other prizes, the six winners of the competition receive three years of commission-free career management, with the Cliburn arranging and providing full artist services for hundreds of engagements. Extensive media coverage for the winners is generated through a documentary, national and international radio broadcasts, publicity efforts with media worldwide, and recordings with label harmonia mundi usa.

YEAR TWO— Non-competition year
(Focus on winners career management and growing local programs)

YEAR THREE—Cliburn International Junior Piano Competition and Festival
(For pianists 13 to 17; to be held June 21–28, 2015)

YEAR FOUR—International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs™
(For amateur pianists 35 and older; to be held in summer 2016)

Additionally, the Cliburn promotes great music and world-class artists through the annual Cliburn Concerts series at Bass Performance Hall, the Kimbell Art Museum Piano Pavilion, and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. It reaches 47,000 elementary school students each year with the education programs of Musical Awakenings® and the community at large with free Cliburn in the Community concerts.
