Client Spotlight: Gozde Ulkuer

We couldn’t be more proud of Gozde and how dedicated she has been throughout her pregnancy. She has remained consistent with her classes and her positivity and uplifting spirit have been infectious. We wish her the best of luck and we’re sure her new arrival will come out dancing!

You began taking In Studio classes before your pregnancy, what kept you coming back?

I started taking DanceFit Barre and DanceFit Cardio Barre classes three months before I became pregnant and have fallen in love with the structure that combines barre movements with fitness exercises. Most of the movements in these classes are done standing up; working the upper body, the core and the lower body, which is an excellent fit for a workout during pregnancy. It became more difficult to carry out traditional floor exercises that are found in other classes, so it felt right to continue with the barre classes. DanceFit Cardio Barre was especially helpful in getting my heart rate and blood circulation up, which kept my energy levels high, and helped reduce swelling in my feet and ankles and helped me get a good night's sleep! The combination of these two classes provided me with the perfect physical and mental strength that is needed for a healthy pregnancy.

What is your favourite aspect of coming to In Studio classes?

My favourite aspect of coming to In Studio classes is the fact that they are located at The National Ballet of Canada. It is amazing to be taking these classes in the studios where National Ballet dancers rehearse. Sometimes, there are props and set pieces stacked in the corner of the studios and we absolutely don't mind it at all! It's a great feeling and atmosphere and very unlike a traditional, crowded gym.

What inspires you to keep coming to classes and keep moving?

The classes are conveniently scheduled during after work hours and the instructors are super friendly and extremely motivating and the classes are never boring! Kate Kernaghan, who instructs all DanceFit classes, makes these classes fun by keeping the flow consistent but changing up movements from time to time, so we're not always getting the same work out. Her upbeat personality and super welcoming nature draw people like a magnet! Everyone else, including the In Studio staff and other students, are also extremely welcoming and supportive, which helped me not shy away from classes with my ever changing body.

Any advice for new moms to-be that want to keep exercising throughout their pregnancy but aren’t sure how to go about it?

DanceFit Cardio Barre is a great place to start. I suggest trying one to two classes a week and slowly building up your strength and stamina, modifying where ever needed. Keep it light when feeling low on energy, keep it fun for yourself and most importantly just keep going. Even the fact that you made it out to the studio is a great start! There will be days when you feel physically and mentally heavy, lethargic and maybe not too attractive, but it all goes away as soon as you start the class. Drink lots of water before, during, and after class, and always listen to your body to slow down when needed.

Will In Studio classes be a part of your get back in shape plan after your bundle of joy arrives?

Absolutely! These classes kept me in great shape physically and mentally during my pregnancy and I can’t wait to come back and be able to carry out every movement with the proper intensity.  Finally, Kate has been an amazing support, always offering options to modify and keeping an eye on me, and has kept me coming back with her warm personality, energy, friendliness, charm, and charisma.
