Elektra costumes

Costumes designed by Deanna Finnman

In just 10 days, Edmonton Opera presents the Alberta premiere of Richard Strauss's riveting masterpiece Elektra. Though this opera is based on an ancient Greek play by Sophocles, our production is set nowhere in the distant past – in fact, our creative team reimagines the story in a post-apocalyptic, dystopian future for an opera experience like you've never had before! Check out our blog for a teaser of the post-apocalyptic costumes in this newly designed production.

The genius of Elektra

100 minutes of operatic genius

When Elektra premiered in 1909, the opening night review in The New York Times declared Strauss as "a genius and a wizard", noting that "beads of actual perspiration stood out upon many a forehead" in the audience before they broke out into thunderous applause.

What makes the music and staging of Elektra such a stroke of insane genius? Read our blog to find out more about this game-changing modernist masterpiece.

2017 Valentine's Gala

2017 Valentine's Gala

On February 14, we welcomed guests at our annual Valentine's Gala fundraiser featuring a stylish 1950s Hollywood theme. Nick Lees from Edmonton Journal praised the "emotional and powerful" performances of the evening by the EO Chorus, Citie Ballet, and the RCA Band. Lees felt the gala was "so good that in future people who weren't there will say they were."

Edmonton Opera would like to thank our donors and sponsors for the success of this year's Gala.
