We begin the program with Johann Strauss, whose waltzes are as patriotic to Austrians as the music of John Philip Sousa is to Americans. On the Beautiful Blue Danube is arguably the most famous, not to mention a perfect example of the natural beauty to be celebrating on Earth Day. In contrast, narrator and vocalist Gabriel Preisser (you saw him in our 2015 performance of The Music Man) will lead you through H.K. Gruber's Frankenstein!!—a contemporary, dark comedy touching all areas of culture from Viennese cabaret and classical music to folk and pop. Concluding the program is Austrian-born composer Arnold Schoenberg's orchestral arrangement of Brahms' moving and expressive Piano Quartet—a timeless piece written and arranged over 75 years apart.
Johann Sebastian Bach’s St. Matthew Passion is widely considered one of the crowning artistic achievements of Western civilization. His masterful musical interpretation of the Last Supper and the crucifixion of Jesus Christ puts chapters 26 and 27 of the Gospel of Matthew to music. The Symphony’s production is unusual in that it is a full staging of the work with the Colorado Symphony Chorus and Colorado Children's Chorale. In addition, tenor Nicholas Phan takes on the part of the Evangelist and baritone Hadleigh Adams performs the role of Jesus.
On Friday, April 28 and Saturday, May 6 the Colorado Symphony Box Office at Boetther Concert Hall will be temporarily moved. We strongly encourage patrons to purchase tickets online (coloradosymphony.org) or by phone at 303.623.7876. In-person sales will be available in a temporary location at our 1245 Champa Street offices during regular business hours. We apologize for the inconvenience.
