Just Released: Ginastera - The Vocal Album with the Santa Barbara Symphony

"...a triumph... the most effective and affecting music is the final scene..."

--John Rockwell, The San Francisco Examiner (Plácido Domingo in Don Rodrigo)

Ginastera - The Vocal Album marks the centenary of Argentinian composer Alberto Ginastera (1916-1983). In 1966, at the New York City Opera, the US premiere of his opera Don Rodrigo gave the young Plácido Domingo his major breakthrough. Domingo performs excerpts from Don Rodrigo, while two sopranos – Ana-Maria Martínez and Virginia Tola – sing Ginastera’s Cinco canciones populares argentinas and cantata Milena respectively. Recorded in 2002 with the Santa Barbara Symphony and conducted by Gisèle Ben-Dor, a notable champion of Latin American music.

Sponsor Spotlight: The Samarkand

A Spotlight on The Samarkand
A Covenant Retirement Community

Established in 1956 as a retirement community, The Samarkand has been a supporter and sponsor of the Santa Barbara Symphony spanning three decades.

Their original support goes back to the mid-1990s when several of the residents served on the Symphony Board of Directors; the relationship has grown tremendously over the time.

According to Pamela Bigelow, the Director of Sales and Marketing, "many of our residents are very enthusiastic about the Symphony, attending the Symphony is a quality experience for both residents and staff. It has improved tremendously over the last 10 years under the artistic direction of Maestro Nir Kabaretti".

Furthermore, The Samarkand has a culture of giving back by volunteering for non-profits in our local community.

The Samarkand currently has 400 residents consisting of 215 residential apartments, 38 assisted living apartments, 16 assisted living with memory care and 63 beds for skilled nursing.
