One of the Russian classics, Eugene Onegin would make the perfect date night; and tickets to this opera in April, the perfect Valentine's gift. This opera captures the beauty of the lost art of letter writing, the thrill of expressing unmatched emotion, and the elements of dance and music that Tchaikovsky was known for.
The young Tatiana expresses her feelings for Onegin, but he would rather continue his solitary life. Flirtations with his friend's fiancée, however, causes jealousy that leads to an unnecessary duel and an inexorable chain of events, where, years later, Onegin finds himself again in the presence of an older, more sophisticated (and married) Tatiana. Though he can now return her feelings, the tragedy of this opera is not that one of the main character dies, but that they must live — Tatiana having renounced her great love, and Onegin having killed his best friend and having missed his chance for reciprocal love.
