Celebrity Series at Home

March 30: Live virtual concerts and more!

Mike Block

Dear Friends,

In this week's edition of "Celebrity Series at Home’” we’re thrilled to announce that our talented and inspiring Neighborhood Arts artists will be creating new digital concerts for you to enjoy from home! The first “Celebrity Series at Home” concert will be with Grammy Award-winning multi-style cellist Mike Block, who will perform the original song he premiered for our Boston Tribute to Pablo Casals this past fall, as well as a mix of classical, folk, and original music. Save the date for this Thursday, April 2 at 8 PM live on our Facebook page!

More than ever, we are reminded of the strength of our community. We miss seeing all of you at performances, but we know we will be back together when the time is right.

Let us know where you are finding inspiration using #CelebritySeriesAtHome on social media and tag us @celebrityseries.

This past weekend would have featured performances by Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, Lyon Opera Ballet, and Pierre-Laurent Aimard. Scroll down for content from these inspiring artists that you can enjoy at home.

Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn

Béla Fleck & Abigail Washburn Present Banjo House Lockdown E1

Check out Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn's Banjo House Lockdown, a Facebook Live streaming concert they do from their home every Friday at 7:00 PM ET during the quarantine. Watch past Episodes 1 on YouTube above, and visit Béla's Facebook this Friday for Episode 3!

Pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard

Stockhausen: Klavierstück IX ∙ Pierre-Laurent Aimard

Pierre-Laurent Aimard's two-evening program titled "Beethoven the Avant-gardist" was developed to contrast Beethoven's role as a leader of musical innovation with other musical innovators. In the YouTube video above, he performs a selection from that program, Karlheinz Stockhausen's Klavierstück IX.

Lyon Opera Ballet

Lyon Opera Ballet

Lyon Opera Ballet's program, Trois Grandes Fugues, features three different works by three female choreographers – Lucinda Childs, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, and Maguy Marin – all set to Beethoven's Grosse Fuge, Op. 133, a piece that Igor Stravinsky called "an absolutely contemporary piece of music that will be contemporary forever."

Watch choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker break down her famous 1983 piece Rosas danst Rosas and make your own Rosas from anywhere!

Bonus Content: Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre

Alvin Ailey principal dancer Soloman Dumas

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has released Ailey All Access, an online streaming series featuring performances of full length works from their repertory, dance and fitness classes from the Ailey Extension, original short films created by the Ailey dancers, and more.

Thank you

We continue to be amazed by your generosity. In the space of two weeks, we have received ticket donations for canceled performances from nearly 800 households, and growing! We are truly heartened by your support.

We invite you to check out our online auction, another option for you to support the continuity of the arts in your community. With no risk bidding (Celebrity Series will not collect bids until the final bid and item availability have been confirmed), the online auction offers feel-good items like monthly flower delivery, cultural experiences later in 2020, and unique collectors’ items.

Thank you to our Dance Series sponsors for 2019-20, including Stephanie L. Brown Foundation, Cynthia & John S. Reed Foundation, and Royal Little Family Foundation, for their support of the Lyon Opera Ballet engagement. This engagement was also made possible in part by Celebrity Series’ LIVE PERFORMANCE! Arts for All Innovation Funds, with generous leadership support from an anonymous donor.

THANK YOU TO OUR SUPPORTERS

Celebrity Series of Boston is grateful to our 2019-20 season sponsors Amy & Joshua Boger, and to the many individuals, corporations, foundations, and government agencies whose support helps fulfill our mission to present performing artists who inspire and enrich our community and our vision of a community of Greater Boston where the performing arts are a valued, lifelong, shared experience - on stages, on streets, in neighborhoods - everywhere.
