Peter Brook’s radical reworking of Georges Bizet’s opera, on our all new Second Stage Series in the beautifully intimate setting of Grisham Hall.
Gypsy Carmen is a sizzling seductress, but play with her and you will get burned. Naïve young soldier Don Jose falls for her, leaving his homespun sweetheart Micaela in pursuit of a life of crime and lust with Carmen and her band. But when Carmen callously drops him for Escamillo the strutting bullfighter, jealousy ignites and Don Jose is pushed to the brink. Passions intensify and burst into an emotional bonfire that threatens to destroy them all. Peter Brook’s gripping adaptation brings Bizet’s opera back to its origins of sexual intrigue, power, and complexity. In this distilled 90-minute production, Carmen’s embrace of her dark fate is elevated from an act of submission to an assertion of power.

Both a political satire and a sci-fi fantasy, the chaotic nature of the film reflects the growing disorder in the world today. This deranged and hilarious feature debut from filmmakers Gabriel Abrantes and Daniel Schmidt won the Grand Prix Award at the 2018 Cannes Critics’ Week. Hairspray, humor, and heartache. Meet the sharp, strong, witty, and big-hearted cast of characters inside Truvy’s beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana. Truvy dispenses shampoos, scathing wisecracks, and free advice, all delivered in equal measure and with her signature flair, to a group of dynamic, hilarious, and resilient women. When tragedy enters the picture, the women offer powerful and universal lessons in sacrifice, love, and the importance of building friendships and memories that can sustain us forever.
The Niceties
When ambitious young African-American student Zoe sits down with her esteemed white professor to discuss a paper she is writing about the American Revolution, discussions of grammar and Google quickly give way to explosive exchanges about race, history, and power. As the passion rises, so do the stakes, as both women become entrenched in their positions, and allow us to see the dangers of the way we talk to each other today, the way we listen, and what happens when we don’t.

Cidney Cher is a contemporary paper and book artist based in Richmond, VA. Her body of work attempts to take hand papermaking beyond the traditional two-dimensional dynamic of the material. Letterpress printing, pulp painting, embroidery, stone lithography, illustration and artist books are prominent mediums throughout her portfolio. She earned a BFA in Artist Books and Printmaking from Longwood University in 2017. A family history in fiber arts led to an early relationship with fabric and stitch work. Papermaking furthers this through the transformation of such fabrics into another object. She draws inspiration from folk art, family and fellow artists.

Bushman Dreyfus Architects, PC announces the opening of an outdoor exhibition of the eight winning entries to the 2019 BDA Prize: INVISIBLE C’VILLE. Giant four-by-eight-foot reproductions of the works of art are now displayed on the west wall of the incomplete Landmark Hotel on the Downtown Mall. The intent is to increase access to the thoughtful and diverse designs produced by community members.
This year’s competition sought graphic proposals and texts that would reveal an overlooked, yet essential quality, experience, or story that characterizes Charlottesville. The winners all received $1000 awards.
Jurors Beth Meyer, Eze Amos, Bernard Hankins, Lauren McQuistion, and Adrienne Oliver selected seven entries from over 40 submitted by artists, architects, and citizens. Their themes and common ground were discussed during a public panel on April 10 at the Jefferson School moderated by Alan Goffinski. Adrienne Oliver wrote: “As a whole, the collection asks us to intentionally look where we have not, and to do so with grace, discomfort, and humility ... demands that we acknowledge there is nothing truly hidden; it is a matter of focus and considered deviation from historically oppressive lenses and perspectives.”
As part of the outdoor exhibit, the jurors released a statement about their process and discoveries, creating a narrative arc linking the winners’ work into a compelling and poetic story.
The entire juror statement can be found on the introductory panel (closest to East Main Street) along with notes on each of the designs. The jury sected Mitchell Roessing, Steve Haske, Stilts Walker, Sean Kois, Bolanle Adeboye, Bill Mauzy, and Mathias Glick and visitors to the indoor exhibition chose Benjamin Romero Salado for the Community Choice Award.
The winners’ exhibit is located on the Landmark Hotel along 2nd St SE. An online gallery of all of the entries can be found at www.bdaprize.bdarchitects.com. Bushman Dreyfus thanks the following organizations which made this project possible: Gropen, the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center, the Dewberry Foundation, and the Charlottesville Mural Project. Bushman Dreyfus Architects is a leading designer of civic buildings for Charlottesville including the Jefferson School City Center, the City Center for Contemporary Arts, and the new Center at Belvedere.
