While in Puccini's opera, Turandot confounds her suitors with three impossible riddles, the historical princess who inspired this character was actually a fearless warrior, wrestling suitors when they asked to marry her! 

Meet Khutulun, a Mongol princess from the 13th century, whose bravery and wrestling skills gave her iconic status in East Asian literature. Her achievements were even recorded by Italian explorer Marco Polo, and Khutulun gradually made her way into Western literature as Turandot.
