Hubbard Street Dance Chicago FootNotes

"Hubbard Street: always evolving"
—Mikhail Baryshnikov

Every spring at our annual Spotlight Ball, we honor one individual for outstanding contributions to the arts.

We've selected one of the world's most innovative and beloved artists to be this year's honoree: Mikhail Baryshnikov. We're thrilled that this Tony- and Oscar-nominated performer, Kennedy Center Honoree and recipient of the National Medal of Honor will attend and accept Hubbard Street’s 2014 Spotlight Award.

"Mikhail Baryshnikov is an artist for whom I have the utmost respect and admiration," says Glenn Edgerton, Hubbard Street Artistic Director. "The appreciation that Hubbard Street enjoys worldwide today is due in no small part to the groundwork laid by Misha over four decades in the U.S., across nearly every conceivable platform. I’m honored and moved to be able to thank him personally at our gala."

Says Mikhail Baryshnikov: “I look at Hubbard Street Dance Chicago’s history and truly appreciate its goals and mission. The company has roots in classic forms and techniques, but is always evolving, always looking for something new in dance. Hubbard Street’s directors and administrators nurture the next generation of dance artists, and believe strongly in the importance of arts education.”

Join us May 19 at the Fairmont Chicago, and you'll see a sneak preview of our collaboration with The Second City.

In addition to thanking and applauding our extraordinary honoree, guests will enjoy an exclusive preview excerpt from our collaboration with The Second City.  Of course, cocktails, a formal dinner, luxury auction and dancing all add to the festivities of the affair. Table reservations and single tickets for this unforgettable evening are available now.  hubbardstreetdance.com/spotlightball

Extraordinary funding from the NEA

Hubbard Street's Youth, Education and Community Programs have so much to celebrate this spring.

In April, the National Endowment for the Arts announced the recommendation of a $100,000 grant to support Hubbard Street's Movement as Partnership (MAP) Program, which provides long-term residency engagement in Chicago area schools. This gift is the maximum single amount the NEA provides.

"Funding at this level truly changes lives," says Kathryn Humphreys, Director of Youth, Education and Community Programs.

The Autism Project and Physically Integrated Dance

Hubbard Street announced in April the launch of two new programs: The Autism Project, for youth with autism spectrum disorder in grades 1–6; and Physically Integrated Dance, for neurotypical youth ages 8–16 with physical disabilities. Together with the Parkinson's Project, these two initiatives now comprise Hubbard Street's new Adaptive Dance Programs department.

Both begin in June with five-week pilot sessions, creating environments in which "everyone dances," says Humphreys.

"Our Adaptive Dance Programs will focus on their participants’ strengths — on their talents and potential, as they learn to see themselves as we see them: as dancers and choreographers," she says.

Join us as we pay tribute to a friend and colleague

Robert Christen, longtime resident lighting designer at Chicago's Goodman Theatre, died March 9.

Bob worked with Hubbard Street for seven of our early seasons, when his work brought the quality of our staging to new levels. His wife, Jan Watson, was our stage manager from 1981–1988.

We're heartbroken to lose such a treasured friend and colleague. You're invited to join a celebration of his life at a memorial service May 13, held by the Goodman Theatre.
