Bringing dance into the classroom

Teaching artist Jessica Hudson makes connections with students in the classroom.

How Carl von Linné Elementary brought dance into the classroom
Carl von Linné Elementary School chose Hubbard Street to broaden the artistic opportunities available to its students, specifically looking to expand their understanding and use of hip-hop dance vocabulary.
We developed a unique program customized to their needs, blending hip-hop technique with dance composition to build their middle school dancers' engagement and confidence.
The program evolved from an after-school offering into an elective for Linné's seventh and eighth graders.
The pilot elective was so successful that, within one month, Linné's administration expanded the program to two sixth-grade classrooms.
And the program now includes an advanced class for seventh and eighth graders who wish to participate in the elective class a second time.
Fitting in. Standing out.
“When we first started working together, everyone was very shy and eager to fit in, to be the same. No one wanted to stand out. It's exciting to see them take the risk of being an individual – to risk being unique and distinct from everyone else. More than that, it's rewarding to watch them appreciate and honor their classmates' differences in order to cultivate an environment that promotes and respects bold, creative personal choices.” —Hubbard Street Lead Teaching Artist Mandy Beck
