December 2011

Happy Holidays!

The dancers from YOU dance worked with the full company for the first time in the world premiere of Romeo and Juliet in November. December brings The Nutcracker to the stage with over 70 dancers and the apprentices will perform as the snowflakes and waiters. In the new year YOU dance will bring more workshops to students in the GTA, and again perform at the Betty Oliphant Theatre. Have a wonderful holiday season.

YOU Ask

Students and teachers can send questions to any of our YOU dance performers to youdance@national.ballet.ca. Your question may be featured in one of our upcoming newsletters.

Many students ask about the music in the Bollywood dance they learned at the YOU dance workshops. The music is by an artist called Bobby Slack Jr. and the album is Independent Minds. If ever you are feeling chilly this winter turn on the music and have fun getting warm to your version of Bollywood Spectacular.

YOU Move

Listen to The Nutcracker music with your class and have them select their three favourite sections of the music. Divide the class into three groups and have each group create a dance using one of the sections. The dance should have a beginning, middle and end and use movements at the high, medium or low level. The movements can be slow or quick, straight or curved. Remember that not only do your legs skip, glide, gallop or leap, but your arms also have movements. Link one dance after another and create your own Nutcracker ballet.

YOU Explore

Research the original version of The Nutcracker story. Either as a class discussion or written exercise, explore what would happen if you made a new ending or added different characters or if you placed the story in a different country.
