Lilies, a new Canadian opera

Edmonton Opera is thrilled to present the Alberta premiere of Lilies, a groundbreaking new Canadian opera based on the iconic play Les Feluettes by Michel Marc Bouchard. Lilies explores a passionate love story between two young men in early 1900s Quebec and features lush, romantic music praised by critics and audiences as “an undeniable achievement” (Le Devoir). Don’t miss this new production that received standing ovations from sold out crowds in Montreal and Victoria!

Watch the trailer for Lilies

Ignite your passion with the season-opening production of Lilies (Les Feluettes), hailed as “a pure masterpiece” (Boucle Magazine) at its Montreal premiere last year. Our exclusive trailer gives you a glimpse of this “powerful, poetic, and unforgettable” (Times Colonist) love story, often called Canada’s own Romeo and Juliet.

From its stark setting in a men’s prison to the provocative storyline of repressed sexuality, Lilies brings together drama, romance, and beautiful music in a theatrical experience like no other.

Listen to the music of Lilies

The music of Lilies is lush, whimsical, and honours various traditions of music from French Romanticism to Quebecois folk songs. Composer Kevin March’s score finds “room for tough expressionism, comic relief, and melting lyricism” (Montreal Gazette) while often reaching cinematic proportions.

To get a taste of the music in Lilies, listen to this snippet where the chorus exclaims “Magnifique!” (magnificent, splendid!) as a hot air balloon makes a surprise landing in the small town of Roberval, Quebec.
