English National ballet; Akram Khan's Giselle, February 28-March 2

"Lamagna's score is a hugely impressive piece of work."
The Arts Desk ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

"Vincenzo Lamagna’s...score takes key themes from the original, twists them inside out and slowly builds them up into ominous, pulsing wind tunnels of sound. The effect is loud and hugely dramatic but it always works with events on stage, never overpowers them." – Dancing Review

Lamagna's “magnificently cinematic score” (Evening Standard) adapted from the 1841 work by Adolphe Adam has been lauded as "superb and a key factor in the fully-formed creation of this new world for Giselle.” (Huffington Post)

English National Ballet: the music of Giselle

ENB's new score for Giselle adapted by Vincenzo Lamagna and conducted by Gavin Sutherland could be a "standalone work of art." – The Irish Times

Characterized by a mercurial combination of acoustic and electronic music, with industrial undertones and haunting melodies, Italian composer Vincenzo Lamagna has established himself as a major collaborator in the contemporary dance world. Gavin Sutherland, Music Director for English National Ballet, worked with Lamagna (who is not classically trained) to expand his musical ideas for a full orchestra. Of Lamagna's adaptation, Gavin Sutherland says it is "a score that is respectful of its roots, but also is respectful of today’s audience, and also something that grabs the attention and holds it from the first bar."

Learn more about this collaboration by listening to the mini-podcasts below. Maestro Sutherland will be the guest conductor for the Harris Theater performances of Giselle with the Chicago Philharmonic.
