Civil War Navies

CW Portraits

Dear ,

Join us as textile historian Dixie Rettig leads a visit to Fredericksburg that provides a highly personal look at the everyday experiences of the women who resolutely survived three Union occupations, cared for the wounded, and helped rebuild the town after the South’s defeat.

Highlights of the day include:

  • An overview of the 1862 battle for control of the town at The Fredericksburg Battlefield Visitors Center
  • A show of 19th-century women’s clothing during lunch at the Kenmore Inn
  • A visit to the Presbyterian church where Clara Barton nursed soldiers and the Hugh Mercer Apothecary Shop.

Rettig leads the tour and displays clothing and quilts of the period during the bus trip.
