Friday 9 March – Get Singing: The Pankhurst Anthem - Live on BBC Radio 3

Your chance to sing live on BBC Radio 3 as we mark an important anniversary for women’s suffrage.

BBC Radio 3 has joined forces with two descendants of suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst to produce a new choral work, The Pankhurst Anthem.

The new commission offers an opportunity for everyone to take part – so come along and join in!

The Pankhurst Anthem marks the centenary of an important Act of Parliament that allowed some women in the UK to vote for the first time in 1918. Composer Lucy Pankhurst has written a beautiful choral setting for a text by the activist and writer Helen Pankhurst, based on a powerful address given by her famous great-grandmother, Emmeline.

On Friday 9 March 2018, the choir Voices of Hope will perform the commission on BBC Radio 3, live from Sage Gateshead. We’re inviting local singers to come along and join in with the second section, Anthem.

Please come to the Radio 3 information desk on the concourse for 4pm for a rehearsal with Voices of Hope. The live broadcast will start at 5pm.

If you’d like to take part, sign up for the Facebook event to register, then download free sheet music from the BBC Radio 3 website. You can either download the melody and words of the Anthem on their own, or choose the harmony versions from the SATB and SSAA scores (pages 6-12).

If you’d like to hear what the music sounds like, you can watch a video of the BBC Singers performing The Pankhurst Anthem here.

‘Please note that, for those who haven’t already booked, if you would like to be in the audience for the rest of In Tune you will need to book a ticket.
