How Hubbard Street's Youth Dance Program
Set My Training in Motion

Hubbard Street’s Youth Program was definitely a foundation setter for my future in dance.

Before I came to Hubbard Street, I had very little training. I had only taken one boys’ ballet class at Chicago Multi-Cultural Dance Center, and I had also danced at my church. When I came to Hubbard Street, I saw the true art of dance and I really found my passion. I took ballet, hip hop, tap, jazz, and modern.  I like them all the same, which I think is a good thing, because that way I was able to give one hundred percent in every class. After about 4 years of training at Hubbard, I was invited to audition for Chicago Academy for the Arts.  I was accepted last spring, and have been studying at the Academy since September, 2016.

Hubbard Street taught me to find my body.  It gave me the basic, fundamental techniques needed for success in dance. Hubbard Street has not only helped me physically, but mentally. My last year at Hubbard Street, I was a member of the Youth Ensemble, and we participated in multiple performances. This allowed me to think, act, and be professional. I think students preparing for a professional career in dance need to know that it will take time to get where you want to be. Dance is a never ending experiment, with many test trials before you arrive at your desired destination -- not being patient is a struggle for me.

At the Academy, I take academic classes from 8:30 am to 1:20 pm, with a break for lunch at 11 am; I take dance classes from 1:30 to 4:30 in the afternoon. I take a ballet class daily, as well as Graham and jazz throughout the week. It is definitely a push dancing every day, but when you love it you can’t get enough.

Hubbard Street is an amazing place, and I will always be thankful for how it began my career.
